Running Windows 7 Professional SP 1 32-bit on an HP Probook 4520s. I recently cloned to a new hard drive using Acronis after my old drive started throwing errors. After a day or so I noticed that Windows Search was not working and I could not get Indexing to restart through services.msc or any other way. A week later (yesterday), I started getting the "Windows is not Genuine" popup even though in my computer it shows that Windows is activated and shows a Product ID. I also noted then that Windows Update will not run--gives me the message that the service is turned off (and I can't turn it on).

Spent a while online with a Microsoft Answer Tech last night and although he tried through a remote session, he could not fix the issue.

Results from the Diagnostic Tool are:

Hi, thanks, yes he did run scannow over the remote session. However, he didn't really offer any insight into what that revealed. Perhaps my only option is to reinstall? :( Precisely what I was hoping to avoid...

It probably wasn't successful. Maybe you could try it yourself to see what it says. If it doesn't work then you could try to follow these instructions to run the System File Checker at boot: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/139810-sfc-scannow-run-command-prompt-boot.html

Other things to try is a System Restore. The only problem is to know when these errors occurred - when to restore from.

I suppose you don't have a full backup somewhere, an image backup?

Sadly, no image, and the only restore points are dated today and yesterday. I'm running the scannow so we'll see what it finds.

That was very surprising, unfortunately!

Well, then you might want to try a http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html

Since you have an HP I assume you have an OEM installation. If so, note the 3rd list item in the Warning frame on the repair install page:

With regards to this OEM iso for Win7, can I use it to do a fresh install of Windows with my current HP OEM Windows 7 license key? That would give me the advantage of switching to 64bit instead of 32bit, which isnt using all the ram in my laptop.

Well, it almost worked. :( Everything seemed to be chugging along and then I got a popup that said, "Windows Setup could not configure Windows to run on this computer's hardware." So now I'm really stumped.

Thanks, Tookeri, for all your help. Think I'll consult with my husband on that last link when he gets home from work and see what he thinks. I have to walk away from it for a little while now until my sanity returns. ;)

Thanks again, Tookeri and Noel. I tried the fix in the link Tookeri provided, and then dowloaded the new drivers as that article suggested and Noel mentions as well. I was able to validate Windows, and Search seems to be working again. The only remaining problem is Windows Update, but I'm getting the 80246002 error, which looks like it's probably an unrelated issue to this one.

If you think the update error is not related to this problem, I'll go ahead and mark the thread as solved.

The non-genuine problem is (obviously!) solved. ;)

The Update error is definitely unrelated - you can continue in this thread while we solve that - or start a new one, if you want.

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data
If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Well, if we can solve the update error, too, I'm all ears! I haven't done anything to address that yet. I thought I might have to start a new thread, but if not, I'm listening! :)

I got the exact same error code myself today in Windows Update and I've done some searches. Many users solved it, at least temporarily, by changing DNS servers to Google's or other. So it's probably only a temporary problem. I'm going go wait a couple of days and see if it sorts itself out. It sounds like an MS issue.

Great that Windows is genuine again BTW :)

FYI, I've done absolutely nothing except waiting...... and now both automatic and manual checks for Windows Update is working again. Like I suspected - a temporary issue :)

I did the first step in the posting guide for updates--ran the SURT. It took a long time (hours--I eventually took my kids back-to-school shopping while it did its thing) but eventually finished. Still getting the 80246002 error when I attempt to check for updates, so I'm going to do the rest of the steps this morning and post results here.
