Windows Phone 7 – Released To Manufacturing

Today is the day that the Windows Phone team has been driving towards, and we’re very excited to say that we’ve reached the biggest milestone for our internal team – the release to manufacturing (RTM) of Windows Phone 7!  While the final integration of Windows Phone 7 with our partners’ hardware, software, and networks is underway, the work of our internal engineering team is largely complete.

Windows Phone 7 is the most thoroughly tested mobile platform Microsoft has ever released.  We had nearly ten thousand devices running automated tests daily, over a half million hours of active self-hosting use, over three and a half million hours of stress test passes, and eight and a half million hours of fully automated test passes.  We’ve had thousands of independent software vendors and early adopters testing our software and giving us great feedback. We are ready.

I last posted on this blog when we reached the Technical Preview milestone, and we’ve received some great feedback since then which we’ve been able to respond to and improve the smart design throughout the OS. For example, folks loved the Facebook integration in the People Hub, but they also wanted ways to filter their contacts so only the Facebook friends they really know will show up in their contact list  – we’ve added support for that.  We’ve also made it easy to “like” a post right from the People Hub, or quickly post a message to someone’s Facebook wall directly.

This has been one of the most incredible product development efforts I’ve ever been a part of. Today’s milestone is exciting not just because of what we’ll deliver to customers later this year, but how it sets us up for success over the long term in the mobile space… we’re really just getting started.

We reached today’s milestone because of the tremendous efforts of the entire team including our partners, early adopters, and independent software developers providing feedback.  I want to send a huge THANK YOU to this extended team– we couldn’t have done it without you!

Terry

Ms is a bit late into the phone market --not sure if anyone will want or use this stuff.

Apple, Samsung and Nokia who are currently the biggest players in the smart phone and Apps market certainly wont be interested which only leaves a very small number of "bit players".

I DO in this case think MS may have dropped the ball -- too little too late with this type of development after all what will it deliver that the others can't do.

Cheers
jimbo

Not to mention this will probably be another one of those products that Microsoft will not support for very long unless an overwhelming number of people buy into it which is unlikely. Can you "Kin" or Microsoft music service, or well you get the idea. If Microsoft wants the new uptake of one of their products like the Apple products do then they need to be AHEAD of the pack with something new or its just not going to happen and all the hype in the world will not make a late product shine like the I-whatevere.

As an example of how and where Microsoft drops the ball I submit for your enjoyment this story from the depths of the Microsoft files:

I personally just had to upgrade my phone and ended up with a new HTC Touch pro2 running WM 6.5 (with contract) and now M$ says Windows Mobile 6.5....its dead, get over it, no more updates or development, why don't you go and by a new phone7 (Clue to Microsoft.....just got this Sprint" HTC touch pro2" phone 2 months ago. so Hey Microsoft....get on the ball and support it or allow an upgrade instead of refusing the upgrade) otherwise I suspect this phone is going to go the way of "Android" because your corporate statement relating to this situation says: "Not elegible for upgrade to phone7".

After just 2 months......, really, Your going to pull a Vista on us again and think we won't remember again. Your must be right....we have very poor memories when we get screwed, we don't talk to our peers about it, we don't recommend the competitor, we don't refuse to upgrade or put pressure on our carriers to offer other options so that we don't get screwed again so soon. but you just keep drinking the koolaid and thinking the sky is rosy out here. It will pass you by in your sleep......oh look......there goes another Ipad or Apad or epad or DroidX, you get my meaning even if you don't want to.

there are already ways to convert this phone to andriod 2.1/2.2 . However I would REALY like to stay with Microsoft and upgrade to phone7...just say the word.....bet you can't, just once, com-on try it, It would not break the bank and it might just regain some customer loyalty if you really want that sort of thing. Just wanted to give ol Uncle Balmer the chance to do the right thing if he can stick his head out of his fantasy world for a few minutes and smell the dissatisfaction since he took the rains but its hard to admit to making a mistakes when you are wealthy isn't it Steve.

Just one more time I got the old shaft w/o the lube. When am I ever going to learn:doh:

Say what you will but look how Microsoft is operating these days. Look what they've done with 7 and Security Essentials for example. Their previous efforts where pretty terrible but they've stepped up and sorted it out. I see no reason why they wont do the same with Phone 7. To be honest, I don't have much interest in smart phones and the like but out of all of them I think from the reviews I've seen Phone 7 certainly looks the best, and the minimum specs that the phones need to have to run make me confident it will operate really well too. I think in recent years Microsoft have realised their short comings and are ironing out the creases. I have used many friends iPhones and my dads Android Experia X10 none of them do anything for me. As I said, I don't want a smart phone but Phone 7 could sway me, I don't say this as some sort of Microsoft champion but as somebody who doesn't care for the current phone systems we have. I'm sure there are plenty more like myself and if it really is good, which reviews seem to think it is, it may take off.

I would like to read some more reviews and actually see it before passing judgement.

If it's good I'll get one, if not...

Not really looking for a smart phone, so it'll need to be special ;)

Funny about Samsung - they were interested (developed the W7 Phone prototype) but now it appears they'll jump ship for Android.
