Known issue, i have it too. I read it's mostly on Samsung monitors after downloading a new driver for it using Win update. You can fix it the following way:

- control panel
- search for color management
- go to Change advanced color management....
- go to tab All profiles
- at the bottom of the list under ICC profiles, there should be a profile that is called sRGB IEC61966-2.1. If not, add it.
- If there is another profile for display listed, like a Samsung profile, delete it

This should fix the problem. You can read more about the problem here.

I've hated that friggin yellow background for months.(samsung monitor here too)
Never thought of actually seeking a solution.

THANKS Jag !

Windows Photo Viewer background color change to black

Hi Everyone,

This is what everyone is looking for and I just did it / works

This applies to the program Windows Photo Viewer / Windows Live Photo Gallery to change the background from a Yellowish white to black so that the pictures appear better.

Windows 7 Instructions

-Start
-In search field type, "regedit" Press Enter

Regedit program comes up

Be careful here don't delete anything

Expand the following folders:
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER
- SOFTWARE
- MICROSOFT
-WINDOWS PHOTO VIEWER
- Select on VIEWER
On the right hand side that has MainWndPos right click on an empty surface

-NEW
-DWORD (32-BIT) VALUE

Change NEW Value #1 to

Backgroundcolor

Now double click on the backgroundcolor word

Change the value from 0 to

ff000000

To do this just copy and paste

On the right hand side that has MainWndPos right click on an empty surface

-NEW
-DWORD (32-BIT) VALUE

Change NEW Value #1 to

Textcolor

Now double click on the backgroundcolor word

Change the value from 0 to

ffffffff

To do this just copy and paste

Now you should have to values that look like below

BackgroundColor = 0xff000000 (Some long number)
TextColor = 0xffffffff (Some long number)

It is as easy as that you don't have to reboot. Open a Picture using Windows Photo Viewer

If you want to change Windows Live Photo Gallery you do the same thing in this location below

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live\Photo Gallery\Viewer

I will work on changing the color of the folder location to black.

PS: If you still don't know how to do it attached are files ONLY for Windows 7 (64 Bit) addition only. It will ask you to enter it into the registery, click yes / OK.

I've followed the instructions here for a 64-bit system, that didn't work, then I installed the attached reg file, and that didn't work either. The images were still yellow, though the background changed from yellow to black. I find this very frustrating considered I use Windows Photo Viewer frequently in my graphics work. Any further help would be appreciated.

One could also use the free Faststone Image Viewer instead and not have any backround to deal with since it displays most images in fullscreen (with flyout menus that appear when one moves the cursor to the edges of the screen). It's nice, imo, to be able to view one's images in fullscreen without any borders or other clutter. If one makes Faststone the default image viewer, then anytime one clicks on an image file, it opens (fast) in fullscreen with Faststone. Also, one can still access and use other external editing programs (such as e.g., Picasa, LightRoom, Photoshop, etc.) from w/i Faststone.

Hi Paula,

The background is now black but the white in your photos are dicted by two things, first the actual picture that you have taken and the second is the display graphics that represents white. Try changing the color profiles under color management. Look up in the internet changing color profiles and then calibrating your colors. Calbrating your colors is easy and can be found by right clicking your desktop, personalize, than choose display on the left side, than calibrate colors.

Same problem with my New Dell U2410. The colors were WAY, WAY off. I'd open the same photo with quicktime viewer, and windows photo viewer and the colors were Terrible in Windows photo viewer, Yellowish Green Tint.. and colors were dark and not Vibrant.. I have a 24" IPS Panel, wide gamut amazing color display with the most vivid pictures I've ever seen.. but not in Windows Photo Viewer.

I just went back to the sRGB profile and wow did it make a difference. I now have great colors.

thanks for the easy fix. Another problem solved by SF.

You're the man. Hated the white backgrind too.

Before I found you're fix, I found faststone's viewer (a total joy to use).

I only use W's Photo Viewer ever so rarely, and only when I sometimes use my pc's printscreen (which defaults to using W's PV).

This issued happened to me today - yellow suddenly became the background color for Windows Photo Viewer on 3 of my 6 monitors...(got the yellow B/G when opening or dragging Photo Viewer to my 3 AOC 2243W 22" monitors but not on the 3 AOC 2450W 24" monitors)

Funny how the Device: drop-down list has Display:1. and Display:4. listed as "Generic Non-PNP" but the 4 other monitors were correctly identified by manufacturer and model number.

The solution suggested by Jag and swarfega fixed it for me...Thx

Thanks Guys.... I too have a Samsung and the Windows Photo Viewer was a putrid yellow. I first fixes to light grey / white, which was much better. Then figured out how to go all the way to black background, which is the best. Wonderful.
