Did you uninstall Kaspersky or Norton cleanly, using the vendor's removal tool? Remember to always uninstall trial or preinstalled antivirus software cleanly before choosing and installing an antivirus product.

Also, a computer needs a few boots and sessions to get used to the new antivirus software - everything still has to settle in. I don't know about Kaspersky, but as a user of Norton Internet Security 2011, I have no speed issues, and I've got only 2 GB of RAM on my Windows Vista computer :-)

Finally but importantly, always make sure that your computer fulfils the minimum system requirements.

You seem to do a lot of extensive testing of antivirus software - you should be okay as long as you back up your important stuff beforehand and run the vendor's removal tool twice when you remove the trialware. Never try to install an antivirus software on top of an existing one - even when the former removes the latter, it's a very untidy process which leaves a mess in the registry. And of course, do not ever run two realtime antivirus programs/suites together - it should not be possible nowadays, but some users still manage to force them both onto the computer...

You see how it goes with your freshly installed Norton - usually waiting for it to get settled in (and you'll probably have to be patient especially after all the testing you've done with trial antivirus software) should be worth it.

I will let others who are operating system experts (I am not ;-) ) answer that question for you - they'll be able to tell you which is the most efficient way to "clean the registry", as you put it, and if such a step is necessary in your case. Doing anything drastic with the registry requires advice given by an experienced person and careful action - you need to know exactly what you're doing :-)

Hello baxter,

* Please list ALL of the Anti Virus programs you have had on your computer including any that came preinstalled.

* I would suggest that you should choose one which you are comfortable with to scan your machine on a regular basis.

* FYI - Microsoft Security Essentials is highly recommended here as an Anti Virus program. Should you require more information let us know.

* Also list the Anti malware progs & Firewall you use.

* You need to give us a few more details re any problems you are having.

If these are stubborn trojans, you may want to give this tool a try:

Norton Rescue Tools

Because Norton Power Eraser uses aggressive methods to detect threats, there is a risk that it can select some legitimate programs for removal. You should use this tool very carefully.
Make sure you Google anything in question before deleting it, & make backups. Also, the tool has the option submit suspicious files for further analysis, use this option.

Here are a couple free programs you can use to have a look behind the scenes to see what is running at startup and at the present.

Autoruns for Windows

This utility, which has the most comprehensive knowledge of auto-starting locations of any startup monitor, shows you what programs are configured to run during system bootup or login, and shows you the entries in the order Windows processes them. These programs include ones in your startup folder, Run, RunOnce, and other Registry keys. You can configure Autoruns to show other locations, including Explorer shell extensions, toolbars, browser helper objects, Winlogon notifications, auto-start services, and much more. Autoruns goes way beyond the MSConfig utility bundled with Windows Me and XP.
Process Explorer

The Process Explorer display consists of two sub-windows. The top window always shows a list of the currently active processes, including the names of their owning accounts, whereas the information displayed in the bottom window depends on the mode that Process Explorer is in: if it is in handle mode you'll see the handles that the process selected in the top window has opened; if Process Explorer is in DLL mode you'll see the DLLs and memory-mapped files that the process has loaded. Process Explorer also has a powerful search capability that will quickly show you which processes have particular handles opened or DLLs loaded.
The unique capabilities of Process Explorer make it useful for tracking down DLL-version problems or handle leaks, and provide insight into the way Windows and applications work.
Do some investigating and see if a remnant of something is starting/running. Since you have tried a lot of AV's, there is the possibility something didn't come out of they system completely. I had this problem when I attempted to remove McAfee and even with their removal tool, there was still a file embedded in my system causing on demand scanners & various programs to hang or take forever to initialize.

Probably your best bet would be to do a clean reinstall & start from scratch.

baxter,

* It appears you have one heck of a mess there....

* Noted in your posts 5 & 10 you mention that you have the {Win 7?}DVD.

*Probably the best advice would be to do a clean install .

*FYI -
Just in case you are tempted to use a Registry cleaner -

Generic advice....Don't!
If you do not have knowledge of the registry, then you would probably be better off leaving it alone, and definitely not placing blind trust in a program to do the job for you.

You have installed / uninstalled many different AV progs. Remnants can remain after uninstalling that can create problems.{ which you indicated you have.}

That would be up to you. Have you settled on Norton after all your testing? While much improved, I do believe Norton is still a resource hog compared to other AV programs. I believe that Avast and MSE are both considered very light on resources. If your system runs fine now without Norton, you may just get by with it as is, but as JMH stated, you likely have remnants of many AV programs still lurking. I am not 100% sure a repair install will fix that, but you have nothing to loose, as opposed to a clean install, which will mean reinstalling everything again. A Guy

I don't think many will have it, it depends on which programs install it. You see the 2 links I posted have info on which programs install it, and the company that makes it. The PVC Pitstop site also says:

Percentage of recently scanned PC's with this process running: 0.04%

That's a small percentage, but that is also just people who scanned at PC Pitstop.

And yes, Eset is considered a good AV. No personal experience, I've used Avast for years :)
