Windows Update 800b0100 error

There are two error codes there - 0x800f0816 and 0x80190194
Refer the below link and use the Fix it tool mentioned in the article to automatically reset the Windows Update components:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

Then do a manual check for updates, and only attempt to install the oldest update found - what happens? what error message do you get (if any)?

Ran the Fit It tool but it said it didn't detect any problems. The oldest update is the security update (KB2930275) - if I install that by itself (or with anything else) that will prevent Windows from booting until I perform a system restore.

Now that we've fixed the underlying problems, it may well install properly (but no promises!).
Back up first, and create a new manual restore point, then go for it ;)

No, sorry, I'd tried it before running Fix It (which, as I say, found no problems) and it's just the same :(
