Hi there,

I've got an issue that Windows update is always running.

By always running, I mean most days, it will start maxing out a full processor core for a reasonable period of time - usually an hour.

I know it's windows update because I go and look at the processes to see what's causing the workload, I see svchost as the culprit. When I look into the services it's running, it's invariably wuauserv grinding away happily. Most of the time, I don't get any updates installed, so it's a lot of heat and noise for no discernable benefit.

Can anyone please tell me:
  • Is this normal? It seems poor design if it is, but, well...
  • If it's not, is it a problem with my update service or config?
  • The other option is it's a nasty. Malware and virus scanners haven't found anything, so I'm not sure where else to start looking.

I've searched on this (here, there and everywhere), but every other thread I've looked at on this focuses on update failing or memory usage blowing out, neither of which are the case here (it's using around 250MB - highish, but not excessive). If this has been asked/answered before, then by all means feel free to point me in the direction of somewhere I can get help.

Thanks,
Geoff.
