Solved Windows Update cannot check for updates - 8007370B error

I've had this error on a few occasions and have managed to work round it by doing a rollback or using an Acronis backup but this time no luck. I have tried 3 times from different backups and each time I end up with the same error where Window Updates no longer works, all unfinished updates disappear from the list and when I turned the computer off it finished off many updates though there were a lot missing. To add to this every time I turn the computer on it downloads the same 10 updates and installs them when the computer is turned off, though they never show up in the Windows Updates panel.

I have tried using the following in an attempt to fix the problem:

Windows Action Centre - nothing suggested.

Microsoft Fixit (Online) - no success

Fixit Tool 50202 - no success

System Update Readiness Tool KB947821 - this fixed some error but not 8007370B

Disk Check - no errors (files or bad sectors)

sfc /scannow - I get the "Windows resource protection could not perform the requested action" message. I have tried running this from within Windows and from a command line, also from safe mode. Even tried the icacls command to revert file/folder permissions with no success.

The only other thing I can add it that I do not have a Windows 7 disc, only a recovery partition plus a Win7 service pack 1 disc. Unfortunately I purchased from Mesh just before they went into liquidation.

Update to above:

I mistakenly thought that all the original failed updates had successfully installed. However sorting them by name today I noticed that KB292733 which failed with a 8007371B error did not reappear for installation.

You have registry corruption present.
This is often caused by bad RAM - so you should check for that using MemTest86+

I need to have a look at your COMPONENTS registry hive

Please copy the C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS file (no extension) to your desktop and then compress it - upload the compressed file to your favoured fileshare site (preferably Dropbox or OneDrive) and post a link.

My apology for the delay in getting back to you. My wife is seriously ill in hospital and time has been a bit limited this past month.

I will check the RAM as suggested. Had to replace it when I first had PC as Mesh installed faulty RAM.

I've uploaded a file - bfkaa.zip - to my OneDrive at Noel's OneDrive
Please download and save it to your desktop.
Right-click on the file and select Extract All, and save to the default destination (which should be a folder on the desktop)

Create a new System Restore point

Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands.

IF EXIST C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.OLD1 DEL C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.OLD1
REN C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS COMPONENTS.OLD1
COPY "%userprofile%\desktop\bfkaa\COMPONENTS" C:\Windows\System32\config

If you get an error with any command, STOP THERE - do not reboot! - post for instructions.

Assuming all commands go OK, reboot, and run another CheckSUR scan - post the new CheckSUR.log file.

Forget the text in italics Windows took a very long time to release the file.

(On the first IF EXIST command I am getting:

MemTest86+ ran successfully overnight with no errors.

Boot to Safe Mode, and try the commands there.

Good - that's what I was expecting.

Now all we have to deal with are the remaining corruptions, which are files.

Open Windows Explorer and go to C:\Windows\Servicing\Packages folder

Find the following files IF THEY EXIST - be VERY careful, since there are almost certainly files named almost identically.

when you find each, DELETE it to the Recycle bin - you may have to give administrator permission to do so.

once both are deleted, reboot, and run another CheckSUR scan and post the new log.

... I'd normally try and give you a command-line instruction for that purpose, but it would fail since both filenames are actually illegal, so the commands would just error out.

Now try Windows Update again - do a Check for updates - what happens?
attempt to install ONLY the oldest update found - if it goes in OK, try the rest.
If it fails, post the new windowsupdate.log file

Hi Noel I accidentally turned the PC off last night instead of putting it into Sleep mode and when it shut down it installed a few more updates including KB3033929 which it did successfully.

I have attached the current WindowsUpdate.log in case you want to look at it.

Edit - Since turning the PC on a few more updates have loaded including the one for Windows 10 readiness. I guess all is ok now but will not install until you confirm it is ok to proceed.
