Solved Windows Update Error 0x80070005 Following Activation Work-Around

Hi Everyone

Apologies for not including any Log files at this stage, but I would appreciate your thoughts on the following:

I've just installed Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium on a new SSD for my aged Acer Aspire 5920G. Following installation, many updates, including SP1 were automatically added through Windows update.
I then came to Activating, and when it was refused, suddenly realised and remembered (after all these years) that I had in fact purchased a retail version of the Upgrade, and had originally installed it over the top of Vista.

After searching Seven Forums I found and used the work-around binary file, provided on these forums for such a situation. With this I successfully Activated.

After continuing to install s/w and generally set things up, I realised that Windows update was no longer running. I manually set it going, and it has just continued to search for updates for hours without anything else happening. Further investigation using the MS Fixit tool revealed the Error code 0x8007005, (Access Denied, as I've since found out).

I've tried every fix I can find, including SFC Scannow and SubInAcl, without any joy.

Am I correct to assume this has been caused by my clean install of an upgrade version? Can anyone suggest a remedy without me having to start again with a new full copy of Windows 7?

Thank you for the suggestion Ranger4. Yes, that is the Activation work around, described in the title that I followed, using option 3 in the tutorial.

Windows updates after a reinstall seem, from wast other users are reporting, seem to be taking hours so it might be worth persevering with them for awhile.

Could you also supply the required information at the top of this section.

Have also followed intstructions for Windows Update posts:
1. SURT: Opens small window "Windows Update Standalone Installer". Starts "Searching For Updates on this Computer....."
Has continued like this for 2.5 hours without result.

2. SFC Scannow: Result: "Did not find any integrity violations"

3. Windows Update not finding any updates, so no update failures.

4. Log Collection: Attached

Thanks for suggestion, but Service Pack 1 (KB976932) was installed automatically the day before I activated the new installation.

Installed Updates list is as follows:
28/12/15: KB958488.
30/12/15: KB3004469, KB2534366, KB2562937, KB2977759, KB3046480, KB2533552.
02/01/16: KB976902, KB976932 (Service Pack 1)

Win 7 Installation date was 28/12/15
I activated the installation late on 03/01/16, so don't know if there was an issue prior to this, preventing updates (so nothing to do with Activating) or if following the Activation.

Ran sfc/scannow again this morning and has now detected something. Have run 3x, and each time get "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them". CBS folder attached. Thanks.

Also when running MS Fix It result shows "Windows Update Error 0x8007003". I've read what I can find on here and elsewhere. Apparently it means BIT.dll corrupted, so perhaps that is what Scannow is now finding? It won't allow me to open CBS file, so can't view it. Any thoughts on what I should do now please?

As you can see above, I ran MS Fix It.
Also the Installation appears to be properly activated, so now thinking issue is not related to that.

Extremely pleased to say that at last the issue appears to be solved!

Started by running the windows Fixit tool on my other (Desktop) pc, which has the same win 7 64 bit OS on it, just to see what a clear result looked like. To my surprise, it showed more errors than the laptop, and on checking found nothing had been downloaded since last August. I than ran through many of the checks already tried on the laptop, and pleased to say it quickly restarted. I then compared every setting on the Desktop and laptop, such as settings in Services etc......all the same. The only difference was the version of windows update Engine wuaueng.dll in C:/Windows/System32. Version on laptop was 7.6.7600.320 dated 14/05/14, but on Desktop 7.6.7601.19077 dated 20/11/15 which I must have downloaded today.

WU stopped working on the laptop the same day that I installed SP1 (coincidentally the day I activated as well) and I am assuming that 7.6.7600.320 was installed at that time. Searching for the latest version, I also found reported issues with the .320 version. Within a minute or two of WU being restarted with the new version, 1.7GB of updates were identified, which are now downloading.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, but this update (which was not identified by any of the "tools") seems to be the answer.

I suspect that when you replaced your HDD with an SSD and then loaded W7 (after Vista) the MS Validation licence "took" but not the activation, the 0x0040154 error, thats why i referred you back to the other post which woud then have updated the windows update agent to the 2015 version.

I will post an MGA diag report if you think helpful, but, so far, have not made any change to the Win 7 Activation itself. I await a full retail copy of Win 7 to arrive, and when it does, will enter the new product code and reactivate. Please let me know if you want it before or after I make the change.

I did run slmgr.vbs /ato a few days ago and (if my memory is correct) returned a result of "Windows is activated".

Fair comment Roy! Unless you know different, I assume nothing will change in that respect until I reactivate with a new full-version product key. Apologies if I appear a little ignorant here...I am!Still going strong.....Installing update 205 of 245!

If you rerun MXdiag and that part of the report that was in my last post does NOT have that error code, theres NO need to use your recently purchased version SAVE it or send it back for a refund.

By the way theres not a lot of places you can get those now, hope it wasn't Ebay.

Great that you have succeeded in this Window 7 Home Premium installation. Now be very careful with your updates from now on.
On Tuesday ( 12 the of Jan ) there will be a new release. Change your update settings to given me updates but let me chose.

There are updates that you need to avoid if you don't want to automatically get Windows 10 on your PC.
