I'm having problems updating my computer. It pretty much says it can't and probably will need a restart. Restart doesn't help though. Here's the log file from windowsupdate.log.

Hi SmuldersN

I am Sampad from Dell Social Media.

This error generally comes up when the system date and time is not correct, specially the year, can you check if the system date/time/year is correct or not?

let me know if that is not the case.

Thanks and regards,

Hi Sampad,

Thanks for your reply. I have checked that before but that doesnt seem to be the problem.

I have also read something about changing the file name of the softwaredistribution folder, but i can't change it.

The strange thing is that i bought this computer together with another one and the other one seems to be fine. I didn't have to change anything.

Problem is solved. I switched my update preferences to 'never update', closed windows update and then switched it back on.

Thanks a lot. The simplest things are sometimes the hardest. You do not need to restart the pc, it's sufficient to restart the service. Greetz Michael

I am so thankful to have have this thread!

Today I noticed when I opened my Windows Update control panel that it said it could not update because the service is not running and a restart might help.

Restart did not help.

Furthermore, both the Windows Update service as well as the Background Intelligent Transfer Service were running, yet the Windows Update control panel still falsely claimed that the service is not running.

Hmm...

Then I noticed that when I tried to view the Update history in the control panel, that it displayed absolutely nothing! Oh boy...

Web searching finally led to a posting which said to examine the contents of C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log which found tons of errors and warnings like this:

One of the lines that I picked and then web searched on very soon led me to this link, thank God.

I cannot believe it, but the simple fix described of toggling the Windows Update control panel setting between "Never check for updates" and "Check for updates" immediately solved this bug.

Microsoft, what hath you wrought?

Koo Doos to this thread!!

I just ran into this issue about 45 min ago (Windows Installed Updates Blank). As with the user above all services were running and also had errors in the Update log. As stated above toggling the Windows Update control panel setting between "Never check for updates" and "Check for updates" solved this issue.

Windows will check for updates and the "View Installed Updates" will reappear. Thanks to the OP!!
