Windows Update error 80070643 - Can not install updates

Windows update stopped working after I restored the OS to the factory setup (using the built in one key recovery button). Windows appears to be working fine, but I cannot seem to install any updates (manually or through windows update).

Trying to install SP1 (for example) from the internet gives the error "Error_Install_Failure(0x80070643)".

Trying to update using windows update yields the following:
"To check for updates you must first install an update for windows update"
When I press "Install now", It tries to install this update, and comes back with the error "Windows could not search for new updates Code 80070643"

- I have tried using the Microsoft fixit related to this code, and the suggestions on the following two threads:

Update Error 80070643

Solved Windows Update Error 80070643

Any ideas as to how I might resolve this issue?

Thanks

Using a lenovo s10 netbook with Windows 7 starter 32bit

The only 3rd party programs I have installed since the reset are CCleaner, Mozilla Firefox and Avira.

Thanks for your quick response Noel.

I ran the fix for MSI software update and .net framework, but neither seem to have fixed the issue.

At this point, I have no idea what they mean - and I'm tied up for the rest of the evening.
I'll try and get to it in the morning (UK Time) but can't promise anything.

There's no problems in the CheckSUR report.

Let's check a couple of things, and see where it leads us...

Please open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands - post the results....

DIR C:\Windows\WinSxS\Backup\x86_microsoft-windows-w..ient-core.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_7.3.7600.16385_en-us_85fb37620804197a.manifest

Then try an Offline SFC /SCANNOW

Reboot the computer, and tap the F8 key until you get the advanced boot menu up - one option should be 'Repair your computer'. Pick that one.

Log into your normal account.
You'll get a set of options - pick the Command Prompt one.
At the command prompt, type DIR C:\
- if we're lucky this will bring up a listing of your normal C: drive contents, including the Program Files folder(s) and the Windows folder.
If not, try D:\ or E:\ (etc. until you get the right letter)
then type the following command

sfc /scannow /OFFBOOTDIR=<drive>:\ /OFFWINDIR=<drive>:\Windows

where <drive> is the letter you found above. (Note the spaces in the above command - in front of the three forward-slashes /)

Wait for the command to complete. (make a note of the response!).

Once it has, type EXIT and the pick the option to reboot.
