My Win 7 Pro x64 file system was corrupted. I believe I has some bad sectors. Something happened to the SP1 install image and I can no longer install security updates without reinstalling SP1. I have tried all the posted suggestions and Microsoft fixes to resolve the Win 7 patch / update install problem. From what I understand I need to reinstall SP1 but the downloaded install image says SP1 is already installed.

If I install Win 10 Home "on-top of" Win 7 Pro will my problem be resolved -OR- should I do a clean install?

Hi jtwaters,

Welcome to SevenForums!

What makes you think you have "some bad sectors"? Did you run chkdsk or 3rd party tool?

Like to see some logs please.

If you would, please download and run SURTx64
When it completes, please upload CheckSUR.log & CBS.log
They are located at: C:\Windows\Logs\CBS
CheckSUR is temporary in its original location.

System crashed. Had problems booting. Had to boot in Safe Mode. Ran chkdsk. It found some problems and fixed them. I have already run SURTx64 but ran it again. Last Security Update I tried got an error (KB4489878) - Code 80073701. WindowsUpdate_dt000.

Updates That Failed Include:
KB4343900
KB4457144
KB4457139
KB4462923
KB4486563
...

Tried to install some of these by hand but failed.

CheckSUR.log - No errors.
CBS.log it too large to mail - 167MBytes.

Moving on to Win 10 Pro x64. Its not worth the effort with MS support for Win7 ending 1/20. I have tried all posted MS suggestions and fixes. Your tests return No-Errors. I am going to clone the disk and install Win10 Pro on a new disk drive. All failed updates return "WindowsUpdate_dt000". Ten of them now...

Thx for the help.

did you run CHKDSK /R (check disk with the /R switch checks the disk for any bad clusters or sectors and takes longer than running CHKDSK /F)

also most of the updates like KB4343900, KB4457144 are not needed as they are replaced or superseded by newer cumulative rollups - latest one is KB4489878 which replaces KB4486563 and older rollups
