Hi all!

So, my pc had started downloading updates, and a few minutes later my system hung. Desktop showed on monitor, but mouse didn't move cursor, hitting keys did nothing, including good old alt ctrl del. So I waited a minute to make sure it wouldn't recover, and hit reset. On windows startup, it installed some of the updates it had started downloading before the crash. However when I got into windows it said there were 3 updates ready for download, but whenever I try to download those 3 I get an error: Code 800B0100 Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

Googling this I saw a suggestion to download and run System Update Readiness Tool (Checksur.exe), which I did, but still got the same error.
So I tried to do a system restore to the day before that crash...still no go.
So I tried downloading the updates manually and install them, but then I get told "The update is not applicable to your computer."

So...pardon my french, but what the hell should I do? I really really really don't want to reinstall windows...

PS: Updates that fail are KB2532531, KB2533623 and KB982018.

Hello Valle, welcome to SF!

This sometimes happens when, for some reason, things are not updated in the right order. There are loads of other reasons but for me this is the most common.

Did you take a look at: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/91738-windows-update-reset.html

It can help you reset the update history and put in what you want in the order advised.

Sometimes you don't want a specific update. That is when you use this: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/24373-windows-update-uninstall-update.html

Post back if you need more...

Thanks for the reply!

Welp. I tried both the options in the Windows Update - Reset thread, one first, then the other when that one didn't help. However, now I can't even find updates, when I click check for updates in WU, I get error message 8024402F. Googled that, saw a post saying you should stop WU, rename the Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder, and restart WU. Did that, didn't help. Feel like I'm digging myself a hole here...

Did you do this exactly like it says here?

Rename the Software Distribution folder:

Click the Start Button, click "All programs", and click "Accessories".

Right-click "Command Prompt", and click "Run as administrator".

In "Administrator: Command Prompt" window, type in "net stop WuAuServ" (without the quotes) and press Enter.

Click the Start Button, in the "Start Search" box, type in "%windir%" (without the quotes) and press Enter.

In the opened folder, look for the folder named "SoftwareDistribution".

Right-click on the folder, select Rename and type "SDold" (without the quotes) to rename this folder.

While still in the "Administrator: Command Prompt" window, type the command "net start WuAuServ" (without the quotes) in the opened window to restart the Windows Updates service.

Yep. Further reading said that error could be a connection error and that I should wait 15min. Restarted PC again just to be sure, waited 15...error. Waited about an hour....and it works! Odd stuff.

Thanks though, looks like it's all good now! :D
