Hi
Windows Update has been trying to install the same 9 updates now since yesterday. Prior to that it's updated with no problems. It goes through all the motions, including having to restart the computer to finalize the updates and it goes through that also, then the Update window says it failed and the error code.
WU then starts the whole thing all over again. Right now it's still on my taskbar and the restart button on the pc has the WU icon ready to finalize after restarting.

I've followed the directions in the Windows UPdate Posting Instructions.

Error code: 80070308

Enclosed is the sfcdetails.txt

I cannot upload the CBS.zip though. I've tried several times and it's not completing. After a few minutes waiting while it says 'File uploading...please wait' the little window goes from that file attachment to a generic page saying
This page cannot be displayed.

llanita take a look at this Windows 7 update fails with code 80070308 - Microsoft Community

Personally I set my updates to let me know they are available and I look at them before I install anything. But it is a personal choice my thoughts are that given updates can cause problems I like to know what I have downloaded and then can go back to dedicated update points get rid of problems. see pic

Having posted the above I think these would not be a bad thing to try

A number of people are having problems this month - with this error code resulting.

I'll ask our Heavy Cavalry to come in and advise.

First, please list all failing updates by KB number
Check and see which update is the oldest and attempt to install that one on its own, after a reboot. - what happens? (which KB number is it?)

Please upload just the CheckSUR.log file from your CBS.zip folder - it should be fairly small.

Well, I run everything again. I forgot to mention that my problem also started with the 7/9 Updates.

I've sent the CheckSur.log as instructed

Malwarebytes found and quarantined some files.
I've rerun scannow twice,
I've used the Windows Update Troubleshooter, fixed
Went to Problems installing Recent Updates link, fixed
Microsoft Fixit also ran it, found no problems.

Windows UPdate is still sitting on my task bar wanting to update the same failed files. Attached screen shot of files

I have followed the instructions on this website under Windows Update Posting Instructions, plus the instructions you sent.

Last week I run a boot scan with adware, and it too fixed some problems.

I don't know what else to do.

Well I did as NoelDP suggested. Also the 9 files are only the important ones, I didn't install the 2 optional files
I looked under the View History, and wrote down which of the updates came in first to last.
Here's a run-down of them

1/ KB2973351. Successful but still showed up for Installation after reboot. Icon still showing on the shutdown button
2/ KB2962872 Failed, rebooted, Icon still shows up
3 /KB2973337 Failed, rebooted, Icon still shows up
4/ KB2961072 Failed, rebooted, Icon stills hows up
5/ KB2972280 Failed, rebooted, only 7 files show up now for installing, even though it was unsuccessful, Icon still shows up
6/ KB2973201 Failed, rebooted, now shows 8 files for installing again. Icon still shows up
7/ KB2966583 Failed, rebooted, 8 files for installing, Icon still shows p
8/ KB2952664 Failed, rebooted, now shows 9 files for installing, Icon still shows up
9/ KB2991850 Failed, rebooted, shows 9 files still for installing, even though the first file was successful. Icon still shows up on shutdown button.

I don't understand why the reboot icon is still showing even though I rebooted after all 9.

Should now read 8 Important files for downloading but shows 9.

Thanks

Susan is probably tied up with things - she's a professional System Admin, who spends all her spare time beating MS about the head to get WU right ;)
Seriously, though, she's a very busy person so it may take a couple more days yet before she can respond.

Hi Llanita,

Have you got any further on with this?

I am in the exact same position and it happened the same day as you.

I have tried everything possible and it's driving me mad.

Looking like I may have to to a re-install. :(

Kerry if you are considering an install then use this - it will get rid of all the bloatware
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/219487-clean-reinstall-factory-oem-windows-7-a.html#post1839164 just be sure you have all your important data backed up and I don't know if you do that anyway but this is a good way to do it - I set my machines to image weekly.

That's your choice of course but it isn't so much of a big deal if you imaged the system before you did that http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/73828-imaging-free-macrium.html

then this http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/675-system-image-recovery.html

I am sure Brink or WHS would be more than happy to run through these a little more thoroughly tha I can because waiting for an answer to the problem may be quite along time.:(

We have a possible solution - but I need to check a couple of things first.

Please open an elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command,

REG LOAD HKLM\COMPONENTS C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS
REG QUERY HKLM\COMPONENTS

post the results.

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

Hi Llanita,

I had a similar issue in the past. I was able to install them one at a time. Also, you can check to see if they are already installed and if they are, delete them and then try installing again. I am not an expert on this stuff by any means, but I have had a little luck in the past trying them methods. Hope it helps.
