Windows Update Hangs at "Checking for Updates"

Good morning,

I just registered, so I'm not entirely sure how this forum runs. I'm assuming you can see my computer information in my user profile, but please let me know if you need me to post it here again.

When I run Windows Update, it hangs permanently on "Checking for Updates." No error ever displays.

I ran Download System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [October 2014] from Official Microsoft Download Center according to the Windows Update posting instructions on this forum. It completed, but had no effect on my issue.

I also ran the Windows Update diagnostic from https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058. It returned error 0x80070490.

It looks to me like you've been using either Advanced System Care or Wise software - which has caused some major problems.

I've uploaded a file - media64.zip - to my OneDrive at Noel's OneDrive
Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract
Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)

Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'
Pick that
You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt
At the prompt type
DIR C:\media64
hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try
DIR D:\media64
or
DIR E:\media64

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

XCOPY <drive>:\media64 <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

(e.g. XCOPY P:\wfire P:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h )

run the command (it should take almost no time) and when the prompt returns, type
EXIT
and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt
then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file to your reply

I haven't used either Advanced System Care or Wise software. I did see those failures in the CBS log, but I thought they existed because, long ago, I went into the "Turn Windows features on or off" control panel and uninstalled all the media sample files. What do missing media sample files have to do with Windows Update?

When I try to download the file in Firefox, the browser blocks it. When I right click and select Unblock, I get the message, "This file contains a virus or other malware that will harm your computer."

In that case either FireFox or your AV are stupid - they are all Windows files.

Something like 50 people have downloaded that file over the past 18 months - and none have complained until now.

I'm still curious what missing media files have to do with Windows Update, but I followed Noel's instructions. SFC completed, reporting 100% file integrity this time. The new CBS file is attached.

I simply ran CheckSUR on the 23rd, before I even logged into sevenforums. I attempted to troubleshoot the problem myself for several days before I realized I needed help beyond my own knowledge. I've attached the log from today's new run.

As before, Windows Update hangs at "Checking for Updates." I ran the Windows Update Diagnostic Tool (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058) and it returned the same error, 0x80070490. I have attached the newly generated logs.

Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command

dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB976933~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.17514

WAIT until it's completed, then reboot, and try again.

(That command is all one line! - use copy/paste to avoid errors)
