I've been looking at these again - still can't think straight - and it looks to me as if there may be a root-cause that we haven't found.
This means that even if we fix these errors, it's likely that other will prevent proper updating.
Such errors may be very difficult to find and fix.

If you're in a hurry for a solution, you should be thinking in terms of a repair install.

Repair install, that's where I boot to a Windows disc and then "repair install" correct? I've tried that with my "student copy" (which has a valid Microsoft code and all that jazz) and it doesn't work. The student software came from a Junior College MSDN server. Is it something where I need to burn a different copy perhaps? Or perhaps I just need a real OEM DVD??

The current CBS.log is too big for me to open (600+MB!) - reboot a couple of times and run another SFC and post the new log.
A fresh CheckSUR scan would confirm the registry is properly fixed.

Screen Shot and Check SUR uploaded to here. CBS log is small, cbs persist file is 35MB. So I uploaded CBS to here, and then did a combo file on the Dropbox.
