I'm currently re-running the update after giving your tip a try.

Will post back shortly - Morris I know how you feel, I've reinstalled twice thinking that would remedy it but no.

Yeah I just had to do this again with a laptop. After the update install I think it took 15-25 minutes to get the update list.

Set the computer to not sleep and let the Windows Update scan run overnight.

install this update

fixed it for me. Still took 15 minutes or so to get the update list, but it works now.
Good thought, but the CBS log indicates that KB3075851 is already installed:

I dunno then. Might be a different problem I guess. All I know is that it would hang at checking for updates and had maxed a cpu core with very high ram usage in my problem. Would never retrieve the update list. This was going on brand new Dell PC's, fresh install PC's, and an older IBM Laptop that I wanted to update before I redeployed it.

Good luck on your problem.

I tried dozens of possibilities, not working, I think it is a problem with one of Microsoft's servers.
If you leave him looking all day, but keep the CPU at 100% and RAM at 80%

Twice the installation from scratch and still no patches appear ?

Do you have installed first the drivers before start searching the windows updates ? Maybe it's taken so long time for looking the patches because is searching the drivers too.

All the hardware selected by myself. I never imagined upgrade my PC :)
I've had issues all day with 2 pc's I've reinstalled Windows 7 on. Updates haven't been picked up at all after installing the initial update agent, just checking constantly.
However I went out tonight and left them both running checking for updates and came home to find they both had a large set of updates ready to install. Maybe whatever is wrong has been fixed in some way although it looks as though both machines took around an hour to come up with a list of available updates.

I had tried a workaround on one pc which I will share if the test rebuild and standard update I'm going to test doesn't work again.
