It had been a while since I've been prompted to do Windows Updates, so I checked the CP applet. It showed the last check for updates was 11/6/2016! The system is set to check automatically. I ran a manual check, but it never terminated. I ran the WAU Troubleshooter (WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab). It reported fixing registry settings and correcting problems installing recent updates. It also reported that error 0x80070490 was *not* fixed.

Search for that code led to posts by MS to fix that error by running sfc /scannow and then running the System Update Readiness Tool (KB947821). The scan found no problems. The SURT has been hung over two hours on "Searching for updates..."

I assume there have been updates since November! Any suggestions on how to get WAU working again would be welcome.

Thanks, johnhoh! The first link did the trick. I already had KB3020369 installed, but after installing KB3172605 (following the instructions by MoxieMomma@bleeping), the update worked fine. (There were only three Important updates to Win7 since 11/6/16, which seems low.)
