My HD on my Toshiba Satellite M645-S4045 went bad so I reinstalled a new one and used the Toshiba System recovery DVDs to restore my laptop back to the factory condition (Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit). Initially Windows Update showed 99 important updates to which I was able to download and install without any problems. But now Windows Update refuses to show any additional important updates (IE9, SP1, etc) and states "No important updates available". I came across the following thread on Toshiba's forum but the recommendations there did not help either - After Restoring to New Hard Disk, No Windows Updat... - TOSHIBA FORUMS

I tried the following:
  1. Made sure the Windows install was genuine and activated
  2. Installed the Intel Rapid Storage Tech driver (dated 2012 from toshibas website)
  3. Installed Hot Fix 982018 as recommended on Toshiba's forum
  4. Ran the SURT
  5. Ran a SFC Scan (no errors found)
I've uploaded a few screenshots as well as the CBS folder. I had to split up files in the CBS folder across multiples ZIP files as it exceeded the file size for posting in the forum.

I'm at a total loss and have no clue on how to update my machine and any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I can see no problems in either the CBS or CheckSUR logs (haven't looked through the history yet, though)

You may have to go to Windows website to get all the important updates you want and its normal to have only 99 important updates and when you re-installed Windows did it already have Service Pack 1 installed

Thanks for the info, because the machine is a few years old when I reinstalled it did not install Service Pack 1. I suppose I can download SP1 and manually try installing it, but the concern is windows update not recognizing that updates are currently available.

Thanks

I have an update. Today I received 1 important update but it was for only Windows Defender. I went ahead and downloaded and manually installed SP1 hoping something would kick in. I restarted the machine after the install and only 10 important updates showed up and installed, all related to .NET and Windows IE10. It seems like all important updates directly related to the OS are not showing up as available? Any ideas?

The WU log doesn't really show any problems that I can see -
If you click on the '34 updates...' link - what happens?

If you want recommended updates to install automatically, you have to enable them using the 'Change Settings' option in the left panel.

All 34 optional install just fine. Since downloading and installing SP1 the only important updates that the windows update has recognized has been about 15 and those were for all for .NET and IE10. I'm assuming that there's been more important updates than 15 rolled out since SP1 was released?

Most updates install the bits for both SP1 and RTM at the time, whether SP1 is actually installed or not - it's only when SP1 is installed that the relevant bits become active.
This reduces the number of updates that are required after an SP1 install significantly (as you've seen!) from around 100 or so to a much smaller number.
