Solved Windows Update Still Wants to Install Successful Updates

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 32 bit.

Yesterday I tried installing the twelve important updates that had appeared for my computer. Nine installed and three got errors (KB2925418, KB2929733 & KB2929961, all failed with error code 80242016). I did the restart anyway and got the BSOD. The PC was recovered using the startup repair tool.

This morning WU still showed 12 updates to be done so I tried again. This time it installed 9 updates and ignored the other 3. The restart worked fine. WU now showed only three updates left. I tried installing KB2929733 & KB 2929961 again. No errors appeared until after the restart and I got the BSOD again. After several attempts the PC rebooted successfully using a previous restore point.

Now the installed updates shows a list of successful updates (and a long list of failed ones) but the successful ones still appear in the list to be installed. These are KB890830, KB2837594, KB2863818, KB2878225 & KB2878227).

SURT was run without errors as was sfc.

Any suggestions on how to get WU to match up its list of what needs to be installed with what is installed?

The SFC scan appears to have only partially completed - only 86 POQs were scanned, while the normal number is at least 120, for a 64-bit system.

This implies that there are registry problems - although CheckSUR found none.

Have you tried a System Restore back to before the system crashed?

Hi Noel,

I'm running 32 bit rather than 64 bit. Does that make a difference.

System restore is what I used to get the PC to boot up properly without the BSOD. I went back to a restore point that was created on the 10th March.

According to your CBS.log data, you're running 64-bit!
Code:
2014-03-15 12:22:20, Info CBS Read out cached package applicability for package: Package_for_KB2120976~31bf3856ad364e35~[B][COLOR=red]amd64[/COLOR][/B]~~6.1.1.0, ApplicableState: 0, CurrentState:0

If you are indeed running 32-bit, then you have serious problems, as the system is attempting to install 64-bit updates.

Oh brother!
Your system appears to be confused about which it is, 64-bit or 32-bit :(
So far as I know there is no way that we should be seeing entries such as the one above in a 32-bit system, and I have no idea where to even start looking for cause/effect/solution.

KB2120976 is a very old update for media streaming - May/June 2010 - so there's obviously some history behind it.

To be honest, I think your best hope of a solution is a repair install using SP1 media. See the instructions here... http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html?ltr=R

While I'm waiting for the backup up to complete I thought I would ask if there is any point removing Windows Update and re-installing it.

Also, since the applicability state is set to zero, does that mean Windows will ignore it?

Can't be done - WU is part of the OS, and attempts to mess with it will almost always lead to tears.

If it's confused enough to start even looking at 64bit manifests, then I reckon there's something seriously wrong.

One other thing I've noticed is that the "Installed Updates" only shows updates installed up to the 15th February but the "Update History" screen shows updates installed on the 15th March. Is there a way of fixing this or is it the repair install method?

That's normal - it means that the updates that apparently installed since 15th Feb didn't completely install, but rolled back.
The repair install should fix things.

I've done the repair install and it seems to have gone ok. I rebooted the pc with no problems last night and then shut it down and went to bed. This morning when I started it up to finish off cleaning up the files, doing the updates and registering Windows the PC crashed however system repair automatically seemed to have fixed it.

I will carry on with the updates (about 150 of them) and will post when that has finished with the outcome.

I'm pretty much back to where I was Friday evening. The PC boots up ok, but I still have some failed updates. KB2598845 is for IE8 and I think it is there because IE8 came with the repair install and I ran the updates before I loaded IE11. The next three KB264415, KB2727528 & KB2868116 all failed with the error code 8024200D. KB2703157 failed with 80242016, KB2621440 failed with 800F0816 and KB2864202 failed with 80010108. Apart from the three which failed with the same code (WU still shows them as updates to load), what can I do about the final four updates listed?
