Windows Update Won't Allow Download Updates for Me to Install

I am here because of the final reply I received to this post:

I cannot get WU to behave properly. At one point it quit checking my machine for needed updates. I carefully reset it to the "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them." and now when I shut down I am told "please wait for update 1 of 1 to install.

I ran SFC scannow and encountered no errors.

I will attempt to attach the CBS log zip file

Last night another update installed 'automatically.' This morning when I first booted I had great difficulty gaining control of my machine. I hit a black screen for a while. I can't recall all that I tried but eventually I got to a screen where I could shut down properly and when I rebooted the system ran 'normally.'

I would still like to be able to research an update before I install it, at least know what it might be doing.

Hi Baum,
I suspect that the "installing 1 of 1 updates" was downloaded and waiting for a shutdown/reboot in the session you were in when you changed the settings.
IF you did a hard shutdown (press and hold power button) whilst it was ininstalling it would have been rescheduled.

Thanks for replying to my post.

Unfortunately I changed my settings on 3/8/16. Here are my selections:

"Download updates but let me choose whether or not to install them."
"Every Day" at "3:00 AM"
and I checked these options
"Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates."
"Allow all users to install updates on this computer" (I am the sole user)
"Give me updates for Microsoft products and check for new optional Microsoft software when I update Windows."
I left the 'notifications' option unchecked.

Did I do something wrong in making these choices?

Since that time I've encountered "Installing one of one updates" or words to that effect when I shut down for the night. Color me "old fashioned" but I've rebooted every morning since 1985. I carefully shut down all open applications and then shut down the box.

I checked my settings and my update history. I've also attached screen dumps of each. I hope they are clear enough to read.

the settings are fine and your still getting some updates.
Question How have you stopped the W10 download??, it might be the troublesome update.

Back to business

Can you go to the windows Update log, and post the last >>2<< days entries, should point me in the right direction.

Here's what I see:

I can't say what I've done to "stop Windows 10 download."

I signed up for the 'free upgrade' long enough ago so that I'd need to do research to say when. I just turn off the nag screens when they pop up. That has worked so far. I'm paranoid enough about Microsoft that I worry about a 'nag screen' that I cannot close some time in the future. I'm worried because the updates seem to download and install without my approval.

The nag screen just showed up again, so I made a copy and attached it.

Windows Defender will ALLWAYS download irrospective of your choice,
Because its your anti-virus

IF you dont want W10 then read this thread.

On the last page follow the download link, Loads of people are using it no problems have been reported with its operation.

Since I reset my Windows Update preferences in early March (when I had to download and install a long list I'd missed) there have also been other files that have installed without approval. A more complete list is attached.

in addition to Windows Defender they are:

KB947821
KB3035583

Do they enjoy the same status as Windows Defender?

Also, I thought my antivirus was Avast (free.) I've used it for years and it seems to work.

How would I check to see if Windows Defender is running, too? I've seen posts suggesting that running multiple antivirus programs can sometimes cause trouble. Is this combination trouble free?

Those 2 KB's.

The first is known as the SURT tool (system Update readiness tool), you would have downloaded on request to look for any system errors.

The second IS the W10 installer/nag, and is pushed out every month, and they have changed its designation up from recommended, gosh MS are getting desperate.

The tool i referred you to will stop it.

Windows 7 Windows Defender is not an Anti-Virus program, it is a Anti-Malware program.
It should not be a problem running it real-time with the Avast Anti-Virus program.
To see if you have it running go to Control Panel and click on Windows Defender.
It will display a message if it's not running.

Win 8.x and Win 10 Windows Defender is an Anti-Virus (+ Anti-Malware) program, and should not be run with another real-time Anti-Virus program.
