Windows Update

I have win 7 ultimate 64 bit. I have windows update set to download updates and let me choose whether to install them. My question is: When does windows check for the updates? There doesn't appear to be a way to set the time. You can only set the time if you have update set to update automatically. I would like to have update check apon boot up.

It will automatically check for updates and it will let u know.

I read in one of Microsoft's blogs a while back that the time defaults to 3AM for all other settings: download updates but let me choose whether to install; check for updates and let me choose whether to download and install. There's not an option to check for updates at boot-up. The blog went on to say the reason for this was to prevent unnecessary delays by checking for updates each time a machine was restarted. Wish I could find that blog again.

Just a personal observation. If you look at the Windows Update dialog box, there's a note at the bottom. It says that Windows Update might update itself automatically when first checking for other updates. For that reason, and because I like to know what's happening with my machine, I set my preference to "Never check for updates (not recommended." I don't want my computer to be restarted without my knowledge should WU go through its own automatic update process and a restart is needed.
