Hi guys,

Didn't want to hijack another person's thread, so thought I'd make my own.

I have been trying to install the following update since yesterday:-

Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2761217)

Download size: 1.9 MB

However, every time I try to do so, I get Error Code 800B0100 - Windows Update has encountered an unknown error.

I have tried downloading and running various hotfixes, none of which have worked (although one of them did delete my Windows Update history).

I have also ran the Windows System Update Readiness Tool, and the report is attached to this post.

If any of you clever people could help me out, I would be eternally grateful!

Thanks,

John

I would wait on this update and hide for now. I get a lot of my information from "Windows Secret" and this update is for updating the Calibri fonts. According to "WS" this is on hold till it can be examined.

Thanks for the reply!

Does this mean that there is nothing wrong with my computer then, and that the update itself is to blame?

It could be. At the "WS" site, Susan is going to be reviewing this update and reporting back any issues next week over the Thanksgiving holidays.

Susan has a great site that explains the updates, which ones are hazardous and which ones are good. Example of hazardous; KB2570791 was a fix for the Daylight Savings Time. But this update also will screw up Microsoft Outlook so you need to get a hotfix patch for that once you install KB2570791.

This is why I NEVER auto download. I read Susan's advice and research myself on the updates.

For your system you could check the problem log;
Go to the control panel
System and Security
Administrative Tools
Event Viewer
Click to open the folder called "Windows Log"
Click "Application" and in the middle section if you see anything red it will tell you what may be causing the issue. You can them arm yourself with the information and Google it to find the fixes. Dates are there too so you can see if you remember what happened that day or if you noticed something when you installed something that day.

Check the other items there too, kind of a good place to visit every now and then to see how your system is doing.

No - you have some fairly major problems, according to your CheckSUR result.
I'll get an expert to have a look at it.

Hello judgejohn82 and welcome to the forums

Here's how to fix your problem. You don't need to hide any updates, so please ignore the above instructions :)

Windows Update Package Replacement

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Please download the attached file, Packs.zip and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Right-click on the file and select Extract All...
  3. Tick the box labelled Show extracted files when complete then click Extract
  4. A window will open showing two folders, Manifests and Packages
  5. Open the Manifests folder and copy the files into the following folder (if there are any files)

    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Winsxs\Manifests
  6. Open the Packages folder and copy the files into the following folder (if there are any files)

    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages
  7. Run the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again
  8. When the SURT finishes installing, copy (Ctrl + C) and paste (Ctrl + V) the contents of the SURT log into your next post please:

    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log

You will probably be shown the error code 0x8024200D after performing this fix, if so, please download and install the update from this link. It must be downloaded using Internet Explorer.

Hi Tom,

Thanks so much for getting back to me.

I have just taken the steps you suggested, and here is the file you asked for.

I haven't had any error message yet.

One slight problem with needing to download via Internet Explorer is that I disabled it ages ago. I've just gone to readd it using "Turn Windows Features On or Off" and have a blank list, so it looks like I can't turn it back on

Hi John,

That's great news! Including the blank list of features? What did you do that fixed it?
