Solved Windows Vista User Account Control

Received following message while trying to open and activate downloaded XAMPP1.7.1 win32 (Basic Package) file as part of online learning study: "Important MS Vista Note! Because an activated Windows Vista User Account Control (UAC) on your systems, some functions of xampp are possible restricted".

I don't have Vista - I have Windows 7 Professional.

How can I find out what the message is even talking about.

Please help and thank you.

Jacee: Could you tell me what you are talking about? You are directing me to some place? I'm trying to find out about a UAC message I received concerning Vista (I don't have Vista). Are you telling me how to download something from Apache?

My questions was not how to download or from where to download something. I want to know why my computer should be telling me I have a Vista UAC ????

The message is talking about a feature introduced in Vista (UAC), but also applies to all versions beyond, so feel free to interpret that as "Windows 7" instead, it doesn't matters really (Vista, 7, 8, 2008 and 2012 all share this feature, and the message applies equally to all of them, but apparently hasn't been updated).

The reason for this message to appear is that the XAMPP control panel is used to control the bundled services (Apache, MySql, Filezilla) and since controlling services require administrator permissions, under UAC those will fail. To workaround this, when you launch XAMPP control panel, you must run it as administrator.

Notepad++ Editor for config.inc.php

Dear Dear Alejandro85: I hope it is ok to send to YOU this new post (on top of the old one) but I wanted to make sure you would see it since you were right on point in helping me with previous problem.

My new one: I'm attempting to take online course in sql but having real problems in setting up work files. I downloaded xampp - which contains phpMyAdmin - with config.inc.php. Instructions are to use Notepad++ to edit the config.inc.php. (I installed Notepad++ on my Windows 7 Professional on C:\Program Files (x86). When I right-clicked on config.inc.php, it brought up Dreamweaver as the default editor. I moved Notepad++ to C:\Program files, but still get Dreamweaver as the default editor. I then went to Control Panel>Default programs>Associate A File Type. and reset .config to Notepad++.

Still no go - - - what am I doing wrong? How do I get the config.inc.php file to be edited with Notepad++ ??

Besides, given that this seems to be a completely separate issue, may I suggest another new thread?

But anyway

Quick and simply, the problem is that you're trying to associate ".config" files to Notepad++ (if I got that right), but you really don't have any .config file at all! Your file is a ".php" (note the extension, not the file name, config.inc.php), so that's the extension you must associate in default programs.
Now, the use of Notepad++ is merely a suggestion, I suppose on the personal preference on the course instructor, but php files are just plain text files, and as such ANY text editor can open and edit them. Built-in Notepad, Notepad++, Dreamweaver, and even MS Word are all able to do the job really, there should be no problem in just using Dreamweaver for editing that file, as long as you respect the file contents.
