After running great for a year, my Alienware M17x R4 crashed when loading BF4, i restarted it and it decided to do an when re starting update and would freeze on the windows screen. I reinstalled windows, then reinstalled the chipset driver and tried to install the graphics card driver AMD 7970m. It will install but once it restarts, it freezes up on the windows screen. Ive tried the driver off the resource CD that came with the laptop, the current edition 9.003,A00 and version 8.973,A01. None of those options work.

I appreciate any help in resolving this matter. Also, tried alien respawn and the option to boot off that wasnt available.
thanks

I had forgot to install the intel driver, just did that and then tried to install the AMD driver, half way though, screen flickered and i got nothing but a black screen and a blinking dot. So i just restored it to a point earlier today and reinstalled the interl graphics driver.

I clicked on the device with the exclamation point and it says " This device cannot start. (Code 10)".

Again, I appreciate the help. My knowledge of computers is limited.

I'm having a similar issue to you, with the whole Standard VGA Graphics Adapter, except with an Nvidia card (a 765M) and I too can't get the Intel HD Graphics to work, except I've got Code 12.

If your processors onboard graphics are reporting problems, you'll most likely need to try and fix those issues first (which is why you should install the intel drivers before the video card drivers, which you did)

Though I do have a solution to fix the Standard VGA, it worked for me. Try this:

0. Disconnect from internet and Disable your anti-virus program and before going to step number 1 (Important)

1. Boot computer in SAFE mode (press F8 during restart)

2. Download a driver for your video card, extract the Driver software .ZIP completely to extract all folders. Extract the .EXE also.

3. Go to Device Manager

4. Select Display adapter (in my case it reads 'Standard VGA Graphics Adapter' that I need to change to 'ATI Radeon X1250')

5. Right click and select Properties, select update driver

6. In the update dialog select 'Browse my computer fro driver software'

7. In the Next dialog window, select 'Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer'.

8. In the Select driver dialog, pick on 'Have Disk'

9. Browse to the folder you extracted the ZIP file earlier (locate the '.inf' file) The .INF file would be located in the Packages>Drivers>Display>XXX_INF.

10. Run the installation, and you are done!!!

11. Restart the computer in normal mode.

12. Enable Anti-virus programs
