Windows won't boot, and I can't recover it

I've been unable to boot my computer into Windows for a little while after trying to install Linux (I messed up the install). My main Windows partition is fine, but I think I messed up the boot partition. When I try to boot it says Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the problem. The suggested help is to use Windows recovery to fix my computer. The file it lists is \Boot\BCD, and status is 0xc000000e. It says an error occured while attempting to read the boot configuration data. My laptop has a recovery partition, but I can't boot into that either. I tried downloading a Windows iso from online and booting into that to access the recovery software. I also had a friend burn me a recovery disk from his computer. Both times I used the software I booted into the recovery environment and it told me I am using the wrong version of Windows. I'm sure that I'm not. Is there any other way to recover Windows (like a universal recovery environment) or any other way to fix it? Thanks for your help, I'd really like to be able to use my computer and access all of my apps and files again.

This really doesn't help. There is no virus, so that is not an issue. The problem is that I can't use the recovery software on the install disk because it says I have the wrong version of windows, even though I an using the correct version of windows. I can't use any of the recovery tools because of this. I need access to the recovery tools to fix it. How can I get access to the recovery tools

If you are able to have your laptop's manual. There is a function key provided for you to be able to boot to the recovery console. For HP I think you can access it thru F11 or F12.

As I stated in my original post, I can't access the recovery console on my computer. I also can't use a disk to recover it since it keeps saying I am using the wrong version of windows. I need some way to recover though

You might have messed up your drive while installing Linux. You may try booting your laptop with Ultimate Bootable USB v4.6 and repair your hard drive's MBR and set the recovery partition of your hard drive to active.

I restored the MBR. When I tried to boot it said there was no operating system. Grub (the Linux boot manager) at least loads windows, it just gives me an error as soon as windows is loaded.
