Press either F5 or F6 at boot (before "Starting Windows") and choose load last know good config...if that doesn't work than something may have happened to your user account

I seem to be getting this problem every now and then recently as well.
It turns out to for me to be the nvidia drivers causing it, I boot into safe mode, uninstall the drivers, reboot, re-install the drivers then everything is fine again (until the next time it happens).

so the drivers go corrupt after awhile? When you install the drivers...is it from NVIDIA or Windows Update

I had been installing them from nvidia, This time (half an hour ago) I have let windows update install the drivers.
Will be interesting to see what happens.
I can't say 100% that it is the drivers, Only that after uninstalling them, then re-installing, everything works again, Which does say quite strongly it is the drivers.

Another obvious troll thread? :sarc:

hows that, sports fan?

seems like a legitimate thread to me. the only obvious thing i can tell, is that there is a problem.

johnny1000, you wouldnt happen to have a usb or external hard drive attached would you? i've read that some people have had problems like that with such hardware (granted they were on XP at the time) but it may be relevant.

Very strange indeed, I will see how the win update drivers go and report back, I've no doubts absolutely nothing will happen now I have said that.

check your logs johnny to see if anything's flagged...

From your desktop,
right-click 'Computer',
click 'Manage',
expand 'Event Viewer',
expand 'Windows Logs',
then click on 'System' and see if there are any with red symbals under 'Level'.

Check each one thats red if there are any and see if they say timed out.

EDIT: & velcrohead too, sorry. :)

The same way you come to the assumption that it's Nvidia driver related.

You may wish to read my post's PROPERLY, It is you that are making assumptions.
Me wonders if you are the troll here.
I am providing input to a problem, as are the others.
What exactly have you provided to this thread?.

As you seem to be implying, this isn't a known issue that should be well documented by now. Perhaps I've jumped the gun here, but the user's unwillingness to backup data and try another install in order to isolate the problem indicates to me that the problem doesn't exist.
But can you expect every user to have the mindset of doing this type of diagnostics? We should always try to fix things before a reformat is determined to be the best course of action...Now I am not trying to be mean but just because the OP doesn't want to drop his computer's OS in an instant to diagnose a problem that we haven't even determined is needed to reformat for...isn't that essentially shooting in the dark right there. We can't expect everyone be just as knowledgeable about problems as us...if that were so forums like this would be un-necessary. If you still feel that the OP's actions are not adequate for your help than others (like myself) will continue to assist him to the best of our ability.

couldn't have said it better myself. really i couldn't..... i was more entralled at the fact that this fellow says he doesn't use windows much, and then says that the person w/ the problem was more or less incompetent. but lets not make a flame war of this.

good show, old bean.
