Solved Windows XP Mode, how do you copy an installer file?

I have now installed Win 7 Pro 64bit and installed most of my software, however I have problems with Outlook 2000, which is not compatible and the WAB.dll is missing.

I have tried the suggestions of copying files and registering them, the registry entry seems to match and I still receive the message that the WAB.dll is missing.

Okay, Outlook ran fine on my XP system so have now downloaded Windows XP Mode Virtual PC and have installed that. (Brilliant tutorial by the way)

Using XP Mode I attempted to install MS Office 2000 and got the message;
"The windows installer does not permit installation from a remote desktop connection"

A search here showed a thread in which the answer was;
"Copy 'Installer' from a shared drive on to a a drive in the virtual PC"

I can see the same drives in XP Mode as are in Win 7 so assume they are all 'shared'

How do I get XP mode to install a program? Where is the installer and on what shared drive?

Lastly, any ideas if this will work, installing Outlook in XP Mode?

Progress, of sorts!

A Google search found that I needed to disable integration features under the "Tools" menu in order to install my Outlook 2000 within the XP VD.
I copied my .PST file from my old standby PC to my new Win 7 system drive by renaming the file on the Win 7 to Outlook Old.pst and pasted in the copied file. Launched Outlook and imported the file, I now have all my emails and address book copied across.

There is still a problem you may be able to help me with, I have imported the user details as .iaf from my standby PC which I know will send and receive without any problems, but on the new VD although they have copied correctly I cannot get Outlook to remember the passwords, even ticking them and clicking apply does not work, when I send I am having to enter the passwords everytime both to send and receive!

I found a Microsoft fix for this by removing a Protected Storage System Provider sub key in the registry and tried this but Outlook is still not remembering passwords, I have 3 user names and so have to enter 3 passwords each time, not much fun!

I am so close to getting this to work its frustrating, can anyone suggest any other ideas?

Aside from using newer software I assume, correct? I would first try creating my own Windows XP image for use with XP Mode and not the one supplied from Microsoft. However you would need your own license for that. It is possible the one from Microsoft has a few parts cut out from it.

Using newer software might be the best choice. If you are willing to consider it, Open Office is free and compatible with Microsoft Office. When you save files you have to specify that you want them saved as MS Office files, but other than that Open Office is very similar software. If you insist on using Office 2000 (which is reasonable) then I am sorry I could not be of more assistence.

I would concider new software, if funds permitted it which they don't at the moment I may phone software4students and see if a redundant OAP would qualify.

I did not realise I could install my XP Home on the V PC, but I would not know how to do this as I do not know where the Virtual XP was installed in order over rite it with my full copy.

I tried Thunderbird but that did not import any emails, couldn't find them and it did not correctly set up my email accounts either. I will see what I can do to sort this.

I did look at Open Office but did not find any reference to email programs, did I miss something?

My Windows 7 Outlook 2000 installation shows all my emails, receives emails and remembers passwords. But it cannot find my address book and cannot send any emails.

My Windows XP Outlook 2000 installation on my V PC shows all my emails, sends and receives but does not remember passwords.

Well, success at least with the installation under Windows 7 Pro! Two days of messing around and then 30 seconds to sort out a missing address book, Outlook now sends and receives. How?

Click Start Menu.
Scroll to Microsoft Outlook
Right click link
select Troubleshooting Compatibility
Follow on screen prompts and instructions.
click Finish
Open Outlook.

No messages about missing WAB.dll

There were no entries in the address book but I can always enter these manually. I am using Outlook 2000.

Well it worked for me so I hope it works for you too!
