A 1GB flash drive G:\, that worked fine as a Ready Boost in Vista, stopped working after upgrading to Windows7 Ultimate.
Right clicking G> Properties> Ready Boost gives: It cannot be used for Ready Boost, Bit Locker group policy settings prohibit write access to non encrypted removable devices.

How can I restore Ready Boost on this flash drive??

Win 7 with bitdefender running will not let you write to an un-encrypted removable drive. Your choices are stop running bit defender ( win 7 ultimate prob) or encrypting the flash drive with bit defender. I dont run it so someone using it is going to have to help you with the specifics

Hello Ken,

Control Panel>System and Security> Bit Locker Drive Encryption shows that encryption is off on all drives, including the flash G.
How do I stop running bit defender?

Thanks gfheiche

In the group policy editor (gpedit.msc) navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > BitLocker Drive Encryption > Removable Data Drives

Change the "Deny write access to removable drives not protected by bitlocker" setting

or turn off the "control use of bitlocker on removable drives" setting depending on what you want.

Note: "Deny write access to removable drives not protected by bitlocker" can be overridden by the policy settings under User Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Removable Storage Access. If the "Removable Disks: Deny write access" policy setting is enabled this policy setting will be ignored.

Edit: Bit Defender is not part of windows it is an Antivirus program.

Thanks for helping.

I changed in User Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Removable Storage Access, the "Removable Disks: Deny write access" policy setting to disabled.

And also changed in Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > BitLocker Drive Encryption > Removable Data Drives the "Deny write access to removable drives not protected by bitlocker" setting to disabled

These two settings, like all the rest, were originally set to not configured, so Ready Boost should have worked, from the beginning, even without the changes to disabled. But just to be sure, I made the changes.

Sorry it did not work. I still get Right clicking G> Properties> Ready Boost gives: It cannot be used for Ready Boost, Bit Locker group policy settings prohibit write access to non encrypted removable devices.

What next, can I try??

Are you even using bitlocker? go to "bit locker drive encryption" in the control panel and turn it off and decrypt whatever drive you don't want it on, or turn it on and make sure you use the appropriate setting in the group policy.

Bit locker drive encryption is turned off on all drives. It cannot even be turned on, because there is no Trusted Platform Module Security Device on this computer.

I don’t need bit locker encryption. All I want is, use the flash drive G as a Ready Boost.

You don't want to use Ready Boost. It doesn't DO anything other than crash your machine if you accidentally unplug the drive. No speed gains, no usefulness at all. Just skip it.

I've got a 2GB SD card dedicated to ReadyBoost on my laptop. I don't notice a speed difference while using 'normal/standard' functions, but for things like gaming and PhotoShop there's a noticeable speed increase, though it's not much.

I've also NEVER had any issues with my laptop crashing when removing the card while running, nor did this happen when I was using a flash drive...on either 7 or Vista. I believe ReadyBoost is actually setup in a way to prevent such problems.

Edit: This thread has quite a bit of information about ReadyBoost and 7.

How did you get ReadyBoost to work in Windows7? How did you overcome the prohibited write access?

I never had any issues with that popping up.

I would do what YupYup suggested and check the BitLocker settings. Either go to the Control Panel or type BitLocker in the start menu and click on "BitLocker Drive Encryption" and if it says that it's turned on for either drive turn it off.

I cannot turn on/off bit locker, because there is no Trusted Platform Module Security Device on this computer.

The flash drive G is now write protected. It is an Attache 2G, has no switch. All efforts to reformat (via disk management etc) have failed.

There are now two questions:

 • How can I reformat the flash drive?

You need this BitLocker Drive Preparation Tool. There are three methods of enabling the BitLocker implementation of Trusted Platform Module Security Device, only two of which are embedded in the motherboard.

When you see the "space reserved for system files" (sic), this is part of that reservation. For reasons that I have no clue regarding, it is possible to install Windows 7 without this volume reservation.

Nonetheless, use the tool.

From MS:
The BitLocker Drive Preparation Tool automates the following processes to configure the hard disk drive correctly:
1. It creates a second volume, if one is not already present.
2. It moves the boot files to the correct volume, and ensures that the operating system is correctly configured to find them at startup.
3. It configures the correct volume as the active partition on the drive for startup.

When the tool finishes, you must restart the computer. The computer’s hard disk drive will then be configured correctly for BitLocker.

And, by all means, use ReadyBoost, if only to determine it's level of benefit on your platform. Without regard to any opinions to the contrary, ReadyBoost is based on, and developed within, valid computer science dynamics.

It is not what a man says, but how he says it that reveals what he means. The medium is the message.

Installation of the BitLocker Drive Preparation Tool failed. It made me download first WGAPluginInstall and then Windows6.0-KB933246-x86, but stopped installation, saying not applicable to your computer.

The WGA install was expected. From Ramblings of a Support Engineer:

Just heard about this last night so I wanted to put this out there.
We're aware of an issue with the Bitlocker Drive Prep tool (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=320b9aa9-47e8-44f9-b8d0-4d7d6a75add0&displaylang=en) on Windows Vista/2008 with SP2 installations. You'll get an error regarding the "Update does not apply to your system" similar to the issue I blogged about CheckSUR. We will have a new binary out shortly that will work with SP2, no timeframe as of yet.

As a workaround, you can try to do the following to manually install the update:

expand -f:* "C:\Windows6.0-KB933246-x86.msu" %TEMP%

start /w pkgmgr.exe /ip /m:%TEMP%\Windows6.0-KB933246-x86.cab

C:\Program Files\BitLocker\BdeHdCfg.exe will be the tool that you want to run post installation of the package.

The GUI version of the tool will still fail to work properly. Use of this tool is discussed more in the following article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933246/en-us

How do I do the manually install the update:

expand -f:* "C:\Windows6.0-KB933246-x86.msu" %TEMP%

start /w pkgmgr.exe /ip /m:%TEMP%\Windows6.0-KB933246-x86.cab

My Computer

OS
windows 7 home premium 64bits
Place the update at C:\
Open command prompt as admin (right click)

type
expand -f:* "C:\Windows6.0-KB933246-x86.msu" %TEMP%
press enter

type
start /w pkgmgr.exe /ip /m:%TEMP%\Windows6.0-KB933246-x86.cab
press enter

once complete, in Explorer, go to C:\Program Files\BitLocker\
double click BdeHdCfg.exe

This should cause the tool to operate.

Actually, STOP!

I am not using good judgement. You run the risk of corrupting your install. Do you have data backed up? Do you an install DVD or USB?

ReadyBoost is not helpful enough to risk an unusable PC.

Sorry, I got your second message too late. Thanks.
Here is what happened:
It did not work.
I created C:\Windows6.0-KB933246-x86

Ran as administrator C:\> start /w pkgmgr.exe /ip /m:%TEMP%\Windows6.0-KB933246-x86.cab. It did expand 4 files total.

Ran C:\> start /w pkgmgr.exe /ip /m:%TEMP%\Windows6.0-KB933246-x86.cab
