Have you tried K-Codec Pack? I think it's better than windows 7 codec pack.

Well you can do it but hand exiting the "merits" of your installed filters can get tricky :(

It's very ikely that something you installed (before even installing the codec packs) installed a codec for it;'s own use that has taken over the 3gp decoding. (As far as AVI goes, it could be either the splitter for AVI or the codec for whatever compression is used IN the avi).

I don't know if I recomend monkeying with it too much, but if you DL a program called G-Spot (Note: Not tested on 7 myself but will probably work, run as admin if necesssary). This will allow you to load the offentding AVIs by drag and drop and can tell you what splitter/codecs that windows is trying to use and maybe a better error message. You can also list all installed codecs and if there is one you want to get rid of (the one causing the error) you can set it's "merit" to 0 so it is not chosen when playing the files.

Very frequently you can end up with several splitters and codecs that all do tha same thing and some are bettter than others. G-Spot will allow you to fine tune which ones get used/selected first when trying to render a specific type of media file.

Hi and welcome

First trash the codec pack. Second Stop cleaning registry.

WMP can play avi files without additional codecs. The codec packs are nothing but trouble. The only one i will even mention is shark007

If WMP still will not play them and you have a backup from when it did. restore it

Well the issue is frequently that there are multiple codecs for a single compression type installed. So reinstallling WMP won't likely help as all the codecs are installed side by side with a relative "merit" which decides the order in which is is "tried" to decode a file. If some buggy codec has gotten installed with a higher merit than the built in windows ones it'll probably stay that way.

Though there are some cases I can think of where it /might/ work. Such as if something installed say an old version (Vista or XP version) of a W7 codec and actually overwrote the file...

Usually when I have codec problem is is because of the multiple side by side installs of competing codecs for the same format and one of them sucks :D

Well, if it were me I'd DL g-spot and start looking at the codec list. Look for things that seem to have old dates on them etc.

I can try running it at home and get the default list. I have one machine with sharkys codecs installed and one that should be relatively clean. Then maybe compare lists. If some codec seems out of place you can try lowering it's merit to 0 to see if the problem goes away, or uninstall that codec by hand entirely (regsvr32 -u <codec dll name>).

Only thing is you have to be careful or you may uninstall a perfectly working codec and then have no wmv playback now or something, though you can always "regsvr32 <codec dll name>" and or raise the merit back up to what it was before to restore the functionity. Just write down what you do so you can undo it later if you want.

Well I ran G-Spot on my system at home and I can see all kinds of extra codecs installed by all kind sof stuff I've installed so I'm not clean. But .3gp files play ok. THey are codec type mp4v and although gspot cant deal with that file type directly and directshow says it doesn;t know what it is, I believe that WMP is loading the one and only codec that can play mp4v files on my system and it's called "mp4sdecd.dll"

I found this out by loading the file in gspot. It tells me that the video codec is mp4v. Then in g-spot go to system->List media types. Right click on the codec type "mp4v" in the list and select "List all fiters accepting this format". There will be a lot of filters listed but only the ones in blue are probably the real ones. On mine there are 4 listed which all point to the same codec ("mp4sdecd.dll") with the default merit of 0x00800001. If you have any others listed and they have a higher merit, that may be the codec causing the problem. Either lower it's merit (System->List Codecs) by right clicking the codec (System->List Codecs, find by name) and selecting "Set Filter Merit" set to 0x00000000. If that doesn't work you can unregister it from there too. But some app you installed that depends on it might not work so well as it will have to use the built in codec instead. (Or maybe it'll work BETTER)

Anyway, g-spot works great, so try spelunking with that...

Glad your problem solved. But if I may suggest, you can try to use Media Classic Player 6.4.9.0 or Media Classic Player Home Cinema version. No installation required and come with build in codec to play almost every media file you throw at them. Been using them with Win 7 x64 without any problem.
