wmiprvse.exe using CPU

i added a SSD to my computer. not sure if related, but later i started to see the above executible running about 20% of my cpu, causing my cpu temperature to go up, then the computer turns off; not sure if due to hi temp (63 degrees celcius).

i have never seen this executible use cpu before like this. how do i stop it? and could it be a virus?

The process is known as Windows Management Instrumentation. It is a Microsoft Windows-based component that provides control and information about management in an enterprise environment. Developers use the wmiprvse.exe file in order to develop applications used for monitoring purposes. These programs can notify users about important events related to network and file or application management right after each event occurs. With wmiprvse.exe, file managers in the enterprise environment are capable of configuring and searching for desktop system information or network and application information across the network.

I don't know if adding the SSD is responsible for this process appearing. Are you using the Enterprise edition of Windows 7? If it's appearing in msconfig you could disable it and see if it has any adverse effect on your computer. You should probably also run a full scan with your anti-malware suite just in case this is a rogue process disguised to look like a legitimate process. A second full scan with a free on-demand tool like Malwarebytes would be a good thing to do.

I'm also using 7 Pro 64-bit. I checked Task Manager, msconfig and another tool called Process Explorer. I don't show wmiprvse on my computer so I have to plead complete ignorance if it should even be on your computer or how long it should run if it's a legitimate process.

But you might want to run Process Explorer. It provides a lot more info than either task manager or msconfig. And you don't have to install it. You can run it inside your browser and the link is at the bottom of the page.

As a personal favor I'd appreciate it if you would keep me updated on what you find out if you can disable it.
