WMP12 Keeps reverting to being the default player

I don't want to use WMP; I use Foobar 2000. Under "default programs," I have Foobar set as the default for all it's file types. Under "Set program access..." I have UNCHECKED the box that would allow WMP to have access.

Nonetheless, every couple of days, WMP reverts to being the default media player for no apparent reason, and I have to go into the Default Programs panel and reinstate Foobar2000 as the default. It's strange and annoying. Any ideas why this is happening?

Welcome!

Sounds like another program is interfering. Can you test this? Don't run any media software for the next few days. Does the problem still occur?

You don't use windows media player so there really is no point in having it loaded by the operating system all the time. Though I really would suggest using windows media player (give it a try its an awesome program :D) , it seems as if the best senario for you would be to remove the feature. Go to your start menu search box and type in features and click on "Turn windows features on and off". A small windows will appear where you can rid of almost anything in windows 7. Expand media features and uncheck windows media player. It will warn you that doing so may affect the functionality of other programs, but I don't think you would care about that. Reboot and everything should be fine
Cheers!

Clarification: I do use WMP for some video files, so I don't want to completely disable it; I just don't ever want to use it for audio.

I've noticed the problem seems to occur most often when I'm restarting my computer. I wonder if that's somehow related to WMP becoming the default .mp3, .wav, etc player over and over again?

This must be a new use of the word 'awesome' that I haven't previously come across. Are you sure you don't mean 'awful'...:sarc:

It's not awful, by any means. It just suits some people's needs more than others' needs.

I posted about it on another thread.

2 main complaints: first, when I double click on a video file, WMP opens up at 100% viewing size. For most files and on my v. hires monitor that means it's about the size of a postage stamp. Nothing I've tried will make it open full-screen as default, which WMP11 did every time.

Second, the Advanced Tag Editor has been discontinued, and W7 offers no other means of editing the additional detail in mp3 files.

whats wrong with double clicking the window as soon as it opens? thats what i do.... i use VLC player for my MKV's but given the choice id use WMP for everything, its a great little program, to be fair though, as long as it plays music and videos, i really dont care what program i use.... id use Itunes if it wasnt for the fact it makes a 2nd copy of all of your music in "itunes" format, and tbh, i already have my music library on there twice (game music) so i dont need a 3rd copy

Why do I have to do that? I don't have to do it with Photoshop, with Word, with Outlook, with OneNote, with Paint.net, with PagePlus, with Excel... - you get the point - and most importantly I didn't have to do it with WMP11.

I repeat: the size of the window when it opens is about the size of a postage stamp. (One of the large ones.) It's EXTREMELY TEDIOUS to have to go hunting for it with the mouse in order to full-screen it (it's in fact far easier to press F11, but that's still more tedious than before). I just have no idea why the default behaviour of WMP11 had to be changed, but: fair enough, some people with 640x480 screens might prefer WMP12's new default behaviour - but why is there no facility to over-ride it?

People are complaining about the new iPad - you take what Apple says you can have, and if you want something Apple doesn't approve, TS.

This is the same thing. On a thread elsewhere, somebody made the suggestion that the WMP development team views content providers as their primary client, rather than purchasers of the Windows OS. I note that they were couldn't be bothered to fix the bugs in the ATE, and so they just abandoned it. They managed to write some code so that a Dolby sign appears in the off-screen area at the bottom of a video, however. Whoopy doo.

Can anybody point to a significant user-centred improvement in WMP12? For the life of me I cannot see anything but trivial changes.
