I hope you folks can help me. I will describe the symptoms, then what I did shortly before they started, which may have caused the problem.
My computer becomes unresponsive. The light that indicates the disk is being accessed comes on solid. Cursor disappears. Ctrl-shift-delete is slow if it works at all. Cannot bring up process monitor. Cannot shutdown or restart. Must turn off power.
So far when this has happened, always I have been watching youtube videos in HTML5. It happens using Firefox or Chrome. Of course, I have no idea whether watching videos has anything to do wit it.
The most recent restore point I have is from a year ago. I use automatic updates, so I am assuming more recent restore points have been lost.
Shortly before this started, I did something that I regret. I compressed the entire C drive. (The process got interrupted once.) After the trouble started, I set the C drive back to uncompressed. Both compressing and un-compressing took hours. I have run check-disk, and it came up clean.
So here I am with an unstable system and no recent restore-point. What to do?
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, service pack 1
Gateway SX2370, AMD A6-3620 APU with Radeon HD Graphics 2.20 GHz
