WORSE than the BSOD

I have an almost new HP Pavilion dv7.

A week or so back I turned on my machine only to find it booted to an error screen which suggested Windows has failed to start then offering a 'Normal Restart' or 'System Repair' NO OTHER OPTIONS.

A Normal Start eventually brought me back to the same screen mentioned above. Next I selected 'System Repair'. The ONLY option now offered was 'System Restore'. With 'System Restore' selected a box appeared with about seven restore points. I tried them all in turn as each one I tried brought me to a screen stating that SYSTEM PROTECTION needed to be turned on for drive 'C'. Then returning me to 'Select a Restore Point'.

Intending to turn on 'System Restore' through 'Safe Mode'. I tried to get into 'Safe Mode' using 'f8' on a reboot to no avail. The above action takes place. 'Safe Mode' is NOT available.

At present the machine has decided on its own to boot up in 'HP Quick Web' which works. I don't even get any error messages now (re above), the 'Return to Windows OS' button goes through a process including 'Starting Windows' before returning to 'Quick Web'. NOW I can't even get out of Quick Web.

I feel sure that I could get the machine to boot into 'DOS' (where I first learned computers) IF I manage that, does anyone know how to edit the registry IN DOS to turn on 'System Restore'? The registry is a complete mystery to me anyway.

I would like to add, that I NEVER run my machine with retore turned off, it has saved me many times. Whatever I have picked up seems to have turned it off and made all the other recovery processes unavailable. It has done a lot of damage. Before this happened I had been using a 'Free' disc from 'Windows Secrets' I can only assume that that may have had a bad influence on my machine.

I need my machine up and running again as there is a lot of stuff on there I need to use and don't want to loose. I did remove the HD and copy off all the docs an jpg's etc I have composed, at that point a Virus check revealed no problems.

I can revert to the factory defalt or even reinstall windows from HP supplied support partition, but I would rather go the way of 'System Restore' if I can.

I really need assistance. Please!!

Jacee, thanks, but I have NO ACCESS to windows whatsoever. I haven't tried yet, but feel confident that I will be able to open DOS to edit the registry if only someone will tell me what to open (in DOS) and what to write where, when I edit. Over the years I have had many difficult situations to escape from. This is the worst I have ever encountered. F8 doesn't work, Sys restore is turned off etc etc. See original cry for help.

Thanks again Jaycee, but I am giving up and going for a format and reinstall. You don't seem to understand I have NO ACCESS to Windows whatsoever on the defective machine. The suggestion you have just made is for a LINUX disc, a brief scan of the article shows that it would be no use to me.

Believe me, I tried to find my own solution before I resorted to a forum, No one anywhere has been able to come up with an answer, I would imagine it is because the boffins who would know my answer just don 't bother to lower themselves to my level and never see my problem to answer it.

YOU are the only person that has made any attempt, and for that I am grateful. I'm off to reset the machine to factory default. (enter an expletive here) **** it.

As I am about to close this thread I have noticed that I have entered the wrong machine make/type in my very first line of text, I was using the Presario to enter details into Sevenforums. I am/was having the problem with an almost new HP Pavilion dv7. It makes no difference as I have now reformatted and set the machine to factory default. Anyone who thought of trying to help, thank you. I expect my request was a little more than unusual. TTFN

Close Thread (Unresolved)

Having bitten the bullet I have reformatted and reset the machine to factory condition.

I'm not really sure how I started this topic. I certainly cannot figure out how to end it.

Administrator please assist, close it for me. Thank you.
