Would Windows 7 have a chance at running on this PC?

a new video card also helps, they're still some good AGP graphic cards out there...

I'm confused. I thought you wanted to install Windows7. But now I see Vista on your shopping list (with Vista you have a much slimmer chance to get away with your specs. Anything less than 2GB of RAM is a Vista dog).
Just above that post, there is one explaining why I've decided to do Vista. Also, we have a laptop with 1GB of RAM that runs Vista quite well. :D

OK, understand. But you are talking about 2 completely different scenarios. I don't think you will be happy with Vista on that system.
On Febr.1, 2007 we also started with a 1GB laptop. I found it to be very sluggish and upgraded to 2GB at the time. That was very much more responsive. But I guess it is a matter of expectations and what you are doing with it. Try video editing - then you'll see the difference.

Vista will almost surely not run on the system, that's one of the reasons 7 is going to do so well is that it actually has lower hardware requirements than Vista!

If you are a student you can get Win7 for $29.99 USD! Look @ www.win741.com for more info! Personally, you have to upgrade RAM and HDD to move to either, and a better video card can also help speed up an old tired system. BTW... there are better inexpensive brand HDD's than Hitachi, and if you are currently on 15GB, do you really need a 500???

I think everyones point is that Win7 will run on this system so much better than Vista, and that you may never be happy with Vista on that old tired dog... but 7 will pump some life back into her!

Unfortunately I'm not a student.* I suppose I'll have to stick with good 'old XP 'till my HDD crashes or something... Hasn't been sounding too good lately.

*Unless I can get a .edu email, nudge nudge, wink wink.

Well, you can always swap the HDD - even with XP. But again, stay away from Vista with that system. i love Vista, but then run on a modern quad system with 4GBs of ram

...Maybe I'll try Ubuntu...
...Or Windows 95, that'd be immensly fast, even on this system...
...Or DOS...

These newfangled OS's need very very powerful PC's... 1GB minimum... For an OS?! :roflmao:
