Ok, so I'm trying to figure something out with my Pace att router, and my kids xbox one. I am trying to disable his wifi connectivity, via the router. I am able to put in the mac address and successfully disable with the mac filter, but he is still able to go online live, and then speaking with whoever with the headset.
It's not important as why i'm trying to do this. I just need to know how to do this. I don't understand. Something isn't correct. The unit is not hard wired to the router. It is just wifi and 2.4 htz

Hi drmax

There is this Parental Control setting in the router.

Maybe you could download the router manual.
And with computer wired to router to manage.

I do not use this feature so someone may able to assist you.

I dont have an xbox.
But xbox needs an internet connection to work.
There are either two options.
You have not filtered the correct MAC.
Or, xbox is using an alternate path to the internet.
You know your kid better than I, so you should now hos technical prowess.
To bypass, one could go wired which requires ethernet cable dragged to a port to router and uses a different MAC. You should be able to find this in router logs.
One might be able to use phone, but that would be a fairly technical hack.
Again, you can find this in router logs.
You may have internet sharing turned on, on a local pc, an are thus using that PCs Internet connection. Again, router logs. Disable Internet sharing and remove admin access to his pc, which I presume you paid for and should be true admin. https://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-360/networking/win-computer
Good luck

  • Lock the router with a strong password. (30+ Random Characters)
  • Do not allow the child access to the password.
  • change the SSID of the router wireless
  • Set a strong Pass Phrase on the wireless SSID
  • set the router to not broadcast it's SSID
If the child gets through that a call to MIT about early entry options may be in order ;)

Any access to the router will allow any changes you make pointless as your child could simply go into the router and change them back ;)

Put password on router like barman suggested, so your kid cant unwind your mac filter.
Look at the link at internet connection sharing.
With ICS, xbox can use another PCs internet connection to access internet.

Whoops. Your router should have a section on logging. From there you should be able to tell which IP is connecting to xbox live. You may need to turn it on. You can test it yourself by going into xbox, noting time, connecting, then checking router logs for that time.

I will need to find that log. I had seen it I think. I thought simply by using the mac addy would have locked it. It had worked on a iPod that way

In theory yes. But you claim it is not working. I assume because you have seen him still on it? The log should confirm something like source 192.168.1.6 connect www.live

i found event log and system log. i don't see anything that says www.live..... I'll have to clear the logs, then look tomorrow when he is connected, to ck this out. Just now reading up on ICS. Had no idea of this. I will look into this. Laptop is always powered off. PC is usually powered off. The router is plugged into smart tv. Can the Samsung smart tv provide ICS? If so that is the culprit

found it

Ok. Did what asked of. Cleared all logs. Turned on xbox 1. Found the mac address under "firewall" log. Odd, this mac address is different from the one listed in the device list, nor is it listed anywhere that I can see, even after any refresh. But I added the address in the blocked list and enabled it. My main PC, the ICS box was not checked. Why wouldn't the address be listed? Its the only xbox 1 that was ever listed. Now, I do run another xbox 360, but it is mine...and is never left plugged into the system. Only when I use it, is when it is plugged in. I'll ck the log and see what address pops up, when I turn that unit on.
