If I have windows 7 64 bit installed, what should I install for XP Mode, 64 bit or 32 bit? and which Virtual PC, 64 bit or 32 bit?
Whatever I have read so far, Microsoft states that XP mode provides a 32 bit environment in XP mode. How is that possible when I install both in 64 bit.
Any help in explaining this whole XP Mode will be greatly appreciated.

it's a good question

My guess is you will want to download both 64-bit versions (e.g. 64-bit Windows will require 64-bit drivers). Although it seems that the virtual environment will be 32-bit.

All of my systems still run fastest on XP 32-bit for the most part. Win7 is fun to play with, but I still prefer XP for raw speed, security, and functionality.
Go for 64-bit on 64-bit. I think it would work better.

I call it the craptop.
yep, XP 64-bit will be fine. The actual XP part I believe is 32-bit while the virtualisation is 64-bit.

i was under the impression that you can only install a 32 bit virtual client.

Actually, you can't install the 32bit msi. You have to have the 64bit msi if you are running 64bit RC1. Or at least that was the error I got when I first tried with the installation files I was originally given from Microsoft.

I have a DVR PCI card that records 8 Cameras. The driver/software for the card won't work with 64 bit windows 7.

I had it setup as a dual boot but I really want to use the Windows 7 more and I found I don't want to shut down my camera recordings to boot into Windows 7.

I currently have 4 Gig of RAM with plans to upgrade.

Should I upgrade to Win7 Pro 64 Bit and install XP 32 bit virtual to run my camera card or will the performanc be lousy?

If I do this should I choose to install Virtual XP 64 bit or Virtual XP 32 bit (keep in mind I need the Virtual XP to install 32 bit drivers for the DVR card, but I've read some posts on here that the Virtual XP 64 bit will run the 32 bit drivers. Is that true?

Hi there
slightly OT but the 64 / 32 bit thing depends on what GUEST you want to run (and how much memory you have in your system).

For example provided the VT feature is enabled on your computer vmware software allows you to run a 64 bit GUEST on a 32 Bit HOST

For example you can run a 64 Bit W7 GUEST VM on a Windows 32 bit XP HOST -- of course as the Host will only see around 3.2 GB RAM the number of Virtual machines and the amount of memory you can allocate to them will be limited.

I'm not sure about Virtual Box but Vmware unlike Virtual PC doesn't require the VT feature to be enabled to run Virtual Machines -- however without the VT feature enabled you can only run 32 bit guest VM's.

Cheers

I decided to give Virtual Box a try since it's easy install and setup, much like VPC. So far it's great but I have 2 problems.

1. Device manager is showing yellow? on "Base System Device"
I'm guessing that's my chipset. Dell/Support chipset for Win XP doesnt seem to want to load on the Virtual Box

2. I have 2 slave physical storage drives that aren't showing up. I need that storage for my DVR (Note I installed the VPC on a separate 20G allocated partition on the same physical drive as my Win7 OS

Found this on Virtual Box user manual:

Warning: The entire SATA controller and the virtual disks attached to it (including
those in IDE compatibility mode) will not be seen by operating systems
that do not have device support for AHCI. In particular, there is no support
for AHCI in Windows before Windows Vista, so Windows XP (even SP2)
will not see such disks unless you install additional drivers. We therefore do
not recommend installing operating systems on SATA disks at this time.

Guess I need to try VMWare because I need to access those slave storage drives.

What's the easiest version of VMWare to setup and is there a free version or are they all trials? I'm not looking for a fancy VPC, just one that will run XP32 bit so I can pick up the dam driver for my DVR card.

Yea tried VMware Player too. It was even worse, it had the option to add the slave drives but it didn't work, and VMWare wouldn't see my DVR Camera hardware at all, Virtual box did but it wouldn't install...

You need to adjust the memory on XP mode
I have 4 gigs under win7 but in virtual machine windows 7 only has 512 allocated to virtual machine
In VM go up top to tools click setting to check yours. You have to have XPM in full screen to get the tool bar
It will be 3 options Action USB and tools tools is what you need Tools ,,,setting
