Win 7 Enterprise Desktop cant see XP Pro laptop on network

Hello all,

I have been fighting this issue for days now and am really getting pissed I haven't fixed it yet. By the way I have been doing this type of computer troubleshooting and maintenance for years.

Work Laptop Windows XP Pro (Wrokgroup) connected via wireless connection
Home Desktop Windows 7 Enterprise 32 bit (Workgroup) NOT IN A HOME GROUP

From my XP Laptop I can go to My Network Places and click on View Workgroup Computers and see my Win 7 Desktop. I can double click on the name of that computer and it prompts me for a name and password and I type in the user name and password for the account I use on the Win 7 desktop and I can see the folders I shared and can drag and drop folders with no problem,

From the Win 7 Desktop I cant see this Windows XP laptop.
From Network Sharing Center / Change Advanced Sharing Settings I have ON Network Discovery, File and Printer Sharing, Public Folder Sharing, etc..
I can Ping my Windows XP Laptop from the Win 7 Desktop via computer name or IP Address. I have tried doing a search for the computer by name and nothing shows up. I have tried opening a browser and http://192.168.1.133 and cant get anything.
I have turned off the Firewall on both machines at the same time and still cant see the XP Laptop from Win 7 Desktop

I have rebooted everything and started over. Yes this includes cable modem and router.

I have went though every tutorial I can find and what ever solution has worked for one person has not worked for me so far so I would be glad to hear something new.

Cheers,
Chris

For this problem you should first try turning off simple file sharing on the XP pro machine.

If that doesn't get it working then try this registry adjustment that has worked in the past for this same problem.

This needs to be done on the Win 7 machine. You may need to create this key if it's not there.

Solution is really easy just modify one key in registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
create or modify 32-bit DWORD: LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy
set the value to: 1

Yes very true, it only messes stuff up, in fact I've seen it cause this same problem of the Win7 machine not being able to see the XP machine. The registry adjustment usually will fix this one but I'm not sure why it's required sometimes.

No joy. I made the Reg change

on the Win 7 machine and still in Network under Computer I only see this computer and no others.

I can't see those screen shots.

You should also go into the Advanced sharing settings and make sure that both the Public and Home-work file sharing options are enabled, there are two windows that need these adjustments. Try changing to 56 bit encryption and make sure that network discovery and all the other options are correct like in the pictures. Looks like you did that already.

The title is a little misleading> XP Pro laptop cant see Win 7 Enterprise Desktop
Then you say>From the Win 7 Desktop I cant see this Windows XP laptop.

So that threw me off a bit, sorry for the confusion.

Did you run the XP network connection set up wizard? Are both machines using the same "workgroup" name?

Any type of A/V software or third party firewalls can also cause this problem to occur.

Yep I titled it wrong. I corrected it now

Yep mine looks like that> switched them both to 56 bit encryption and still no joy.
I can still connect XP to Win 7 with the 56 bit encryption
so that hasn't hurt anything from the other direction

Cheers,
chris

There may be other changes required in the advanced settings, sometimes you need to enable password protected sharing, the link shows the right ones. Always reboot machines after making these changes.

Any type of A/V you might have installed will also cause these types of problems to occur, sometimes you need to uninstall A/V's to fix these sorts of problems.
