XP VPC from ASR Backup possible?

I need some info before I go buying stuff. It seems Win-7 Pro comes with a fully registered XP (Sp3) for "XP Mode". Nice, but I have a lot of effort invested in this highly tweaked XP Pro box. Does anyone know if I could use my ASR Backup to build a VPC on Win-7 Pro, like I would use it to rebuild a crashed XP machine? I want "MY" XP (Sp3) system on the VPC rather than starting from scratch.

I haven't had any slow problems with XP Mode on my system. No it's not as fast as running it from an installed HDD. But, it's not particularly slow either.

Also,, keep in mind that a Virtual Environment is not the same as a pure one.
The teaks you made, either won't work, could make things worse, or work and have no effect at all.
Or they could work.

As for creating a VHD from an image or backup of a drive.
If it can be done,, it's tricky.
Or you can see if there is a converter that will convert your backup to a VHD.
Search for VHD converters to see what I am talking about.

Absolutely ridiculous. Mine runs just as fast as a decent physical machine. I use it every day and haven't had any problems.

Thanks guys. It seems no-one knows for sure. I’ve build an XP VPC on another XP box using an ASR floppy and a a Backup file. That was a little tricky too, but it worked fine. VPC emulation is slow. Doesn’t this new Hardware Virtualization make any difference?

Yes. But it also depends on your PC specs.

And if you got the ASR backup to work before,, it should work again.
There isn't that much difference to it, it's just a more integrated version of VPC

Hi all
seems to be a difference on XPMODE -- I found it slow and not flexible enough either.

What I would do is install vmware server / player or Virtual Box (all FREE) and then run a full blown VM XP machine.

With vmware you can use "Raw Disks" (your native XP system") or do a P2V converstion - Virtual to physical conversion from an Acronis true image backup or with its own converter (also Free).

You might have to re-activate Windows XP -- if its a normal XP system not installed from an OEM disk then no problem. Phone (re-) activation should work -- don't tell MS though its on a Virtual Machine. Just say you need to run some stuff on XP so you need it on an older machine because you've got W7 on your new one.

No, it is not all hype. Hardware Virtualization is a plus for any Virtual Environment.
I do believe that VMWare and VirualBox both support it. But you need to have hardware that supports it.
7's XPMode requires it, while the others do not, but will utilize it if enabled to do so.
