Hey all,
I am running aDell XPS 8100 with Windows 7 64bit. I have 8 GB RAM and Radeon 5770 graphics card and a 1TB hard drive.

My problem occurs when i play a High Def Movie (1920x1080) from a file on my computer. It starts to play fine but if I go to fast forward or jump to a different section of the movie it freezes and after a few seconds i get:

"your computer is running low on memory. quit other programs and then try again. windows media player"

After that all i can do is shut down Windows Media Player and choose something with less resolution. Any ideas?

Windows Media Player may erroneously deliver the message “Your computer is running low on memory. Quit other programs, and then try again” when attempting to play DVDs, stored movies or other media. This message can be the result of an unregistered Windows Media Player .dll instead of an actual scarcity of memory.

To fix this issue, follow these steps:

1. Launch a commpand prompt in administrator mode. Navigate to Programs > Accessories > then right-click “Command Prompt” and select “Run as Administrator”
2. Copy and paste the following command: for %a in (%systemroot%\system32\wm*.dll) do regsvr32 /s %a into the command prompt.
3. Press enter and wait for the command to process.

After performing these steps, re-attempt usage of Windows Media Player.

Open resource monitor from the task manager, or type it into the start menu. Then use the snipping tool to capture an image of the memory tab.

Change the size of virtual memory

If you receive warnings that your virtual memory is low, you'll need to increase the minimum size of your paging file. Windows sets the initial minimum size of the paging file at the amount of random access memory (RAM) installed on your computer plus 300 megabytes (MB), and the maximum size at 3 times the amount of RAM installed on your computer. If you see warnings at these recommended levels, then increase the minimum and maximum sizes.

1. Open System by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking System.
   
2. In the left pane, click Advanced system settings. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
   
3. On the Advanced tab, under Performance, click Settings.
   
4. Click the Advanced tab, and then, under Virtual memory, click Change.
   
5. Clear the Automatically manage paging file size for all drives check box.
   
6. Under Drive [Volume Label], click the drive that contains the paging file you want to change.
   
7. Click Custom size, type a new size in megabytes in the Initial size (MB) or Maximum size (MB) box, click Set, and then click OK.

Increases in size usually don't require a restart, but if you decrease the size, you'll need to restart your computer for the changes to take effect. We recommend that you don't disable or delete the paging file.

ok i think it was for 32BIT which is lower on ram for windows 7. 64BIT you dont get memory problems.

sorry for being such a dodo head on this one. I understand that this is slowing the process of trying to fix the real problem which is windows media player. Can you give me some advice on how to post the picture of my screen shot onto this forum?

go to the system information how i described in a earlier post and type the page file value it should be the same as mine if windows has the default paging file settings (i have the same amount of ram as you 8GB)

Open Snipping Tool by clicking the Start button , clicking All Programs, clicking Accessories, and then clicking Snipping Tool. (or just type Snipping Tool in the start menu search box and click Snipping Tool on the result)

it pops up on the desktop

Click the arrow next to the New button, select a snip type from the menu, and then use your mouse or tablet pen to capture a snip.

then you save it to your picture files

great thanks you have lots of paging file so its not that we need to find out how much ram windows has allocated in the system resource monitor will tell you this.

type resource monitor in the start menu search box and click on the result. and click on the memory tab in the window at the top.

ALso i understand how to snip and save. But then hos do i posted an embedded image onto this forum?
