i am on a webpage, any webpage, and as i'm looking at the page it can slowly or quickly get smaller and smaller. my zoom will go from my normal 125% setting down to 12%. i reset the zoom and it happens again. this has been an interrmittent problem for the past few weeks. i use IE9. tonight i downloaded firefox to see if the problem would appear there also. it did. so i do think it's a windows 7 issue. can someone help me? is there some way to lock the zoom? what is causing this? my computer is set to download windows updates automatically (not the optional ones).

i don't know if it's related, but at times the icons on my desktop get small. when i check i see that it is set to small icons. i change it back to medium icons, and it goes back to small icons. this also is intermittent, and sometimes seems to coincide with the webpage zoom issue, but not always.

i sometimes lose my hot key settings for my wireless keyboard. for example, i hite the hot key for mail and nothing happens. this also is an intermittent issue that sometimes coincides with the other issues and sometimes does not.

but they all have started in the past few weeks.

i have not added anything new to my computer.

i appreciate your help.

Hello Muffin, and welcome to Seven Forums.

It almost sounds like you may be mistakenly reducing the zoom level somehow. Possibly with your mouse scroll wheel if the CTRL key is pressed or stuck down.

You might see if the tutorial below may be able to help any. Especially step 7 to uncheck the the Reset zoom level for new windows and tabs box.

i'm sorry it's taken so long to reply. thank you both for your suggestions, but neither have helped. i've seen the DPI display size settings and have them set at medium. it makes no difference. the zoom still changes when i'm on a webpage. "reset zoom level for new windows and tabs" is unchecked. the point is the zoom level is not holding. i appreciate your suggestion that i might be mistakenly reducing the zoom level. i really don't think i am. i do not use the mouse scroll and the CTRL key is not pressed or stuck down. i don't know what drivers are, but could this be a driver issue? just now as i was tping this the zoom level went down to 30%. i put it back ot 150% and so far so good. sometimes i must reset it 3-4 times before it holds for a while.

Since this is happening in more than one browser is what was leading me to a possible mistake being made somewhere.

I'm starting to think it may be something related to your keyboard now. Do you have another keyboard that you could temporarily use instead as a test to see if it still does this when not using your current wireless keyboard? This will help eliminate or confirm it as a cause before spending to much of your time troubleshooting it.

If it works fine with the other keyboard, then post back with the brand and model of the culprit wireless keyboard. We'll see if there may be any newer drivers available for it that may help.

i also have started thinking the problem might be with my wireless keyboard. first i'm going to put fresh batteries in it. i want to wait until the zoom issue is happening and then change the batteries. if that doesn't do it, i will borrow a keyboard from someone and see if i have the problem with a different keyboard. it is interesting that the two hotkeys i use are intermittently not working. thanks so much for your suggestion. i'll report back.

thought i would report back to let you know that i have had no zoom problem since i last posted and my hotkeys have been fine. i have done nothing to try to fix the problem. so i don't know why it started or why it stopped. if (when?) it starts up again i will let you know after following your suggestions about the keyboard. thank you so much for your help.

It's always great when it fixes itself like that. :)

Problem solved!

I wanted to let everyone know that my intermittent automatic zooming in problem has been solved. It was my keyboard. It was a Microsoft wireless ergonomic desktop. It came with a mouse that I did not use. I had the keyboard about 3 years. I tried downloading two updates from the Microsoft hardware website for this keyboard, but that did not help. When I replaced the keyboard, no more problems. Thank you for your help.
