Solved I'm trying to retrieve data from drive

Hi Brink,

I just tried using this but is having problem with the take ownership option for the drive i was trying to retrieve data from. i'm able to see the option when i right click on other files on my desktop but couldn't see it when i right click on my external drive (a drive from my crashed laptop through usb). i also could not see the security options when i click on the properties of the drive. my crashed laptop operate on win 7 while my desktop operate on vista.

Can you help me out?

Hello Kango, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I have updated the REG files. Please download them again, and run the Add_Take_Ownership.reg file again to add "Take Ownership" to the drive context menu.

Thanks for updating. The option appeared but when i press it, the cmd just appear and disappear. And i'm still having the error that my drive is inaccessible and incorrect function. Is there any message that will come out if the takeownership is successful? Also my drive has a windows 7 login password. Does it affect anything?

Kango,

Are you able to open the drive at all, and drag the files you wanted to your desktop, or take ownership of the files themselves?

If not, is this a desktop computer that you could connect the drive inside the system to a SATA port. This way you will have a "Security" tab afterwards to manually take ownership of the drive.

Unfortunately, i'm not even able to access the drive. When i double click on it, the error message that the drive is inaccessible and incorrect function pop out. My drive is partitioned into 2 drives and both cannot be accessed. The only portion that can be accessed is a small portion meant for recovery and that is another drive. thus i can see 3 drives in total when i connect it to my desktop but can only access one. the security tab is also not available even though i'm in admin mode.

i have also tried it on a xp desktop with the various instructions but also cannot see the security function after doing in safe mode and disabling the simple sharing function.

Do you mean that i will be able to see the security tab if i put it through my internal sata port instead of going through a usb?

I tested mine using a USB connection, and it didn't have a Security tab. It did with a direct connection though.

Hey Brink,

I managed to take ownership of one of the partition using direct sata and safe mode in xp but is still having trouble for the other partition which has windows installed in it as the security button is still not available for this partition. When i try to double click this drive, the message is that it is not formatted and asked me whether i want to format it. Is there other way to retrieve data from this partition/drive?

It's sounding like you may have a corrupted HDD.

You might see if using the free Partition Wizard Home Edition program to select that drive using steps 7 to 18 in OPTION FOUR of the tutorial below to see if it may be able to recover it for you. If it does, then you may or may not still have to take ownership of it afterwards.

Can you explain to me wat does the partition recovery do the the hd as i'm afraid that it will damage the recovery partition also? Does it combine all the partitions into one?

I did a full scan using Partition Wizard Home Edition and the software found quite a number of lost/deleted partition. I'm not able to select all the partitions as it is stated that some of them overlap each other. What will happen when i recover them? Is it going to be repaired or will these error partitions be forming new partitions?

i've also done a surface test on it and found 8 errors. Is there anyway to repair it?

The partition recovery option in Partition Wizard attempts to recover the selected HDD/partition that says it's unformatted from here to hopefully not lose the data on it.

Let's see if we can access and recover the data first. Afterwards, a new thread would be appropriate for the 8 errors since it's not on topic with this tutorial.

Hi,

I'm having trouble with recovery all the partitions as some of them overlap according to the software. Below is a link to two screenshots i had taken from the software.

Can i know how do i recover the partition without having to delete any of the partitions?

Kango,

If you can't recovery the partition with only selecting one of them, then you might try the free program that it recommended below to recover the data from them.

Download free data recovery software and data recovery boot disk from Power Data Recovery.
