I want to change my laptop update settings to automatic download and install but in Update Settings it is set to "check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them". The type is faint and the drop-down box containing the other options for updates does not drop down. How can I change this, Rob N.

Hi TheDeerDude,

Paul, FYI, you just linked the OP to his own topic :)

Thanks for the thumbs up.
It's been one of those days!
I have corrected the link above.

Thanks guys for the "Windows Update Settings is greyed out" link - Update Settings is now set at "automatic update". It's a minor point but although the setting is now what I want, the text is still greyed out !! Does anyone know why this is the case - my laptop is not part of any group and the Administrator settings have never been changed !!!! As a 65 year old dinosaur these things often leave me dumbfounded !!! Thanks again.

Hi Rob N,

Update Settings is now set at "automatic update".
My laptop is not part of any group and the Administrator settings have never been changed.

I am glad you now have the update setting you want!

It does sound like an administration setting to me though.
Where did you get the laptop from?
Was it from a company?
Was it refurbished?
Were you ever able to change the settings (if so, how long ago)?

I hope this helps!

Hi Paul, thanks for your reply. My laptop was refurbished when I bought it from Harvey Norman several years ago but I have altered the Update Settings from time to time with no difficulty. I changed it to "let me choose which updates..." a while ago because one of my two laptops (the other one has Windows 10) was occasionally downloading huge upgrades sending me way over my monthly data allowance of 7GB (I have to get internet thru the mobile network). When Windows 10 was identified as the culprit I went onto Windows 10 Forum and found out how to disable the update server. Problem solved but when I tried to put Windows 7 back to auto updates the other day it had greyed out !!! As the Americans would say, "Go figure" Rob N.

There lies the problem then I think!
You could try and do a system restore prior to that change being made if you have one!
Just a thought!
I will try and have another look for an answer later for you.

I hope this helps!
