I changed appropriate permissions and copied the windows mail folder from vista to Windows 7. It worked great and I thought all was well till I got an email with an attachment .eml. The error was the classic "windows cannot open this file.. . no program is associated" etc., message. I saved the .eml attachment to desktop, created the association to winmail.exe, and double clicked it. It opened winmail, in the same manner as though I had just clicked the short cut to winmail.exe. Without opening the .eml attachment.

I've also replaced win7's msoe.dll with Vista's, again to no avail.

Also as I'm searching around, I'm running into "wisperings" of the possible need to keep a copy of Vista functional so that I can download windows mail updates to install in windows 7.

It may just prove to be not worth the hassle. It's a shame. I LIKED O.E., settled for Windows Mail, and am disgusted with Windows Live Mail!!

Solution: eml windows mail

Hi,

Ok my english is not really good but I had the same problem as you and I found a solution.

Click on Start ans click on Run. Type regedit and click ok.
Go to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\eml_auto_file\shell\open\command

Double click on Default in right pane and change Value Data for exactly that:
"C:\Program Files\Windows Mail\winmail.exe" /eml:%1

and click ok. That's it, enjoy ! :)

Thank YOU, so VERY much! I don't have a clue how you guys figure out these Registry edit solutions. But however you do it I appreciate it. I've made many a fix thanks to someone else's genius.

I have same problem after putting winMail in windows 7..........I followed your directions and got as far as Classes but in my PC with win-7 no eml_auto_file Any ideas on why it's missing..? Thanks Bill
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\eml_auto_file\shell\open\command

Thanks Bill

Follow up ! Found this site and downloaded a file and it changed the w-7 to allow winmail to be default http://www.winhelponline.com/articl...issing-from-the-default-programs-listing.html Go there and then look for attachment mailclients.reg download to desktop and open merge.. Then just go to your winmail and make it default.. Not sure if link below will work..

 Thanks Dan ! Got pretty much everything working now. WinMail appears to still work well on windows 7 and has all the features that WLM does not have.. Only miner problem is if I get an email in an attachment in my winmail and go to open it I have not been able to get winmail to open it. Even after I associated .eml with winmail.. Any thoughts on that

Thanks Bill

Hi,

Check that again:
Click on Start ans click on Run. Type regedit and click ok.
Go to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\eml_auto_file\shell\open\command

Double click on Default in right pane and change Value Data for exactly that:
"C:\Program Files\Windows Mail\winmail.exe" /eml:%1

It should be work. If not, make sure Windows Mail is set as default: Open Windows mail, click on Tools, Options and on General Tab, click on Make Default. Also, save an eml file, right click on that, go to "open with" click on "Choose Default Program..." and choose "windows mail", check "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" and click ok.

Good luck ! :)
