Hi,

I'm also having the same problem that I cannot open .eml attachments in WM using Win7.

I have tried the fixes in this thread http://www.sevenforums.com/browsers...-wont-open-windows-mail-seven.html#post441481 without much luck.

I don't have the registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\eml_auto_file\shell\open\command

I also tried downloaded mailclient.reg fix. Windows Mail doesn't show up in my Default Programs folder.

In Windows Mail, I have been into Tool>Options>General and changed it to Make this application the default Mail Handler.

I saved an .eml message to the desktop, did the file association to open with WM. All it does it opens the WM client and not the .eml file.

What did I miss?
TIA

Yes, I will change my  to a :) if you find me a solution.

I still get the message:
"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing the action, blah blah blah."

The pop up blocker thing is not the problem. Thank you for trying.

You are using the abbreviation WM, which can be the old windows mail. Are you using the current windows live mail?

I am using Windows Mail which I imported over from Vista when I upgraded to Win7.

I have no problems with Windows Mail other than opening *.eml attachments. Everything else opens just find.

You need windows live mail. Its an easy transfer.

There is no official support for wm on Windows 7. According to my information, WLM will open all attachments. Mine does.

But I like my Windows Mail.

I tried all the solutions in this post:
http://www.sevenforums.com/browsers...-wont-open-windows-mail-seven.html#post441481

See my comments at the bottom of the post.

TIA.

I must be honest, I really wanted to make that a happy face for Christmas, but I do not have the expertise to make WM work with 7. I would be able to help with WLM, though.

I can help you in one way. If you are going to change the registry and make other tweeks. Make a system Image of your hard drive and store it in a safe place. At least 10% of the questions that I get, are problems caused by tweeks.

In any event, sorry I could not be more help, but I truly wish that you and your loved ones have a wonderful holiday and a safe and Happy New Year.

:) Thank you for trying. I wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

BTW, I did not need to do those registry tweeks because I don't have the .eml_auto key in my registry.

Hi Richard,

I hope this is not considered hijacking of Keener's thread but I thought that seeing as how my problem is also with WLM it would be best to keep it all in the one thread, if not let me know and I'll delete this post and start a new thread.

Here goes:

When I receive an email via WLM that has a .doc attachment I keep getting this error -

errorcode.jpg

now I have repaired both WLM and MS Office 2003 but continue to get the above error, do you know of a solution to the problem?

Thanks and Merry Christmas.

If you create a desktop shortcut for notepad.exe and then paste that shortcut into your %profile%send-to% folder (call it something like 'read with Notepad') then you will be able to read those .eml messages in notepad in Windows7.

Please note, however, the attachments to an email message may not actually form any part of the body of the .eml file, they could be linked to instead.

If it was only that easy Ken J .............. but it does not work that way either, this problem is a PITBA.

I can save it to my desktop and then read it too, but I can't understand why Winword 2003 will not open it from the WLM email though .......... it used to.
I have even deleted all Win7 updates back to 10/2009 and the problem still exists.

I had the same problem and this worked for me :D

From:
How to enable Windows Mail app to operate in Windows 7 - TechSpot OpenBoards

* Manually edit the registry using the following steps.

* Click: Start ==> All Programs ==> Accessories ==> Run ==> Type in: regedit ==> OK

* Open: HKEY_CURRENT_USER ==> Software ==> Classes ==> eml_auto_file ==> shell ==> open ==> command

Note: If the "eml_auto_file" option is missing, it will normally not be necessary to do this edit. This key appears to be added when Windows Live Mail is installed. If Windows Live Mail is never installed it will not be there.

* Highlight: Command ==> In the right panel double click: Default ==> Copy and paste the following key into "Value Data":

"C:\Program Files\Windows Mail\winmail.exe" /eml:%1

* Save and exit.

And the bolded part is what DOESN'T work for me, since I don't have that key in the registry.
So, where do I go from here?

I had this exact problem with WLM when I tried to open saved .eml msgs. Simply making WLM my default email program did not help. The WLM client would open but not the msg. Here's how I fixed it; perhaps it will work with WM:
- From the start menu: Default Programs
- Associate a file type or protocol with a program
- Select .eml
- Click on the Change program button
- Browse button and browse to where you imported WM from vista (Program Files 86/ or Program Files). WLM is in the 86 folder/Windows live
- Select the executable

This worked for me.
