CD\DVD Driver corrupted in registry

Help,
I have a liteon DVD player that has stopped working. When I access the device driver I get the message below

"Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged"

According to the liteon site the win 7 generic cdrom driver is the the correct driver. I have uninstalled the driver then reinstalled it using the device manager.

I have windows 7 home addition.

I have attempted to access a restore point without success. This is another problem.

Any ideas what to do next and what may have caused the problem. I assume that I need to go into the registry and make changes but I don't know where to go.

Hi and welcome.
Try it one more time.
I would suggest to go into your Control Panel and select Device Manger and find your CD/DVD and select UNINSTALL.
Shut down computer normally and start up again and let Win7 find and install the drivers again.

What model Lite_On drive is it?
Have you checked to see if it is campatible?
You may find an upgrade for the firmware. Let me know what model.
