ACad; I found this on MSDN:
Quote:
It is true that Removable Storage Manager (RSM) is no longer supported on Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2. Ntbackup, available in Windows XP/Windows Server 2003, depends on RSM to access LTO media. Restoring ntbackup data stored on a RSM-controlled LTO media to Windows 7 is therefore not a supported scenario. **snip** Ntbackup Restore Utility: Download details: Windows NT Backup - Restore Utility
Hope this answers your question?

Thanks for the reply, iseeuu.

I have been using an LTO drive for backups on XP and then Vista before I installed 7. I unfortunately only realized that RSM was not available after the installation.

Is there a way to copy the RSM from Vista to 7 so I can still use the tape drive? If this is impossible, is there software available to use the drive directly instead of using RSM?

Would Symantec Backup Exec work with an LTO tape drive on 7?

Did you manage to figure out anything re: copying RSM over?

I have an Ultrium LTO-2 tape drive that I'm tying to get working in Win 7.

I've been told that with the correct drivers for your device, you can still
use it in these OSes, but that you must use 3rd party backup software.

I'd like to compare notes if you're still following this thread.

Did you tried Backup Exec 12.5 / 13 (2010) on Win 7

Hi, I'm not able to install "Backup Exec Server" on my Windows 7. The option is not available in the installation. When I do a "Backup Exec for Windows Servers Environment Check", I've got :

"This computer is not a member of a domain. The Desktop and Laptop Option cannot be installed on Backup Exec media servers that are not included in domains. The Central Admin Server Option and the Managed Media Server feature are not supported in a workgroup."

Do someone able to install BES successfully on Windows 7 standalone?

Thanks

Well, just guessing here, but with a name like "Backup Exec Server",
I'm guessing it's not designed for desktop OS like Win 7.

Description fromn
"Comprehensive data protection and recovery for
Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2008, and
2003
- Standard and Premium Editions.
http://eval.symantec.com/mktginfo/en...s_DS.en-us.pdf

I'd guess they might have made the AGENT compatible with Win 7,
but doubtful they made the server run on Win 7. Is there a deskop
version of that program? That might be designed to work on it.

===============================================

BTW, I did notice on my Ultrium LTO 2, that Windows 7 automatically
installed as MS driver for it..it just took a while. Since the drive works
great in Linux, I'm going to try some 3rd part backup software in
Windows to see how it works out.

WinXP x64

Hi there,
I found this thread because I am also disappointed and I am looking for a solution as easy and affordable as the old good NTBackup. Right now I'm using WinXP x64 and I started to migrate to Win7 (also x64). I even managed to get my Adaptec AHA-2940UW work under this OS (which is really NOT seamless process), but in Win7 my HP DAT40 drive is useless and so is my DAT collection.
When I realized that RSM is missing in Win7, I had to ask myself, if MS is really serious about that, because I can imagine that lot of smaller companies use ntbackup with tapes and because of the situation they are unable to migrate to Win7, even if they would want to.
So I'm planning to try to "extract" RMS from WinVista and "force" it to work with Win7. Before I start it, I have a question: Is there some component in Windows Server 2008 R2 that can be used to read/write data from/to tape drive?

Hi Wift, for your AHA-2940UW, you could tried this.

64bit driver for adaptec scsi card (winxp64)

Make sure to take Vista x64 (because already signed) version of driver and adjust the .INF to fit with your Hardware ID or your 2940UW

It's work for me with a aha-2940UA. I tweaked too my AHA-2940U2W (aic78u2.sys) with a 2003 driver by signing the .sys but your Windows must run in Test Mode. Use a part of How to create your own code signing certificate and sign an ActiveX component in Windows and drivercert zip - Download from *************** - Filestube.com (instead downloading 2Go and more from Micro$oft for only less of 1Mo of tools.)

Wift:

Is there more than one version of that Dat40? I'm assuming you are using
the SCSI version of that tape drive?

If so, what's wrong with the drivers published here?

Am I missing something you mentioned?
