Hdd gone-ish, trying to repair partitions.

Finished the scan and like before I ticked the top 2 and finished but couldn't apply (because all the ones I ticked were already existing).

Followed the mbr steps and rebooted, but it still BSODs at the "starting windows" screen.

Greg, you came in at the right time.

Click on the Image placement X and it will take you to icloud where you can see the images.

In Op's case the partition table in the first sector is in tact.

Since rebuild MBR did not work, I would suspect a boot sector virus which is preventing it.

I would also think that he should now resort to fixmbr running the recovery console since fix MBR retains the existing partition table.

And now you are the best person to lead him doing that or anyother process that you may think best. ( that's not my cup of tea and that's why I said you came in at the right time. I shall now take a back seat. :))

I see no such X to click to see the screenshots. I see empty spaces where he refers to their locations in two posts.

But I trust your expertise with interpreting PW's Recovery Wizard's findings and it seems the partition table is scrambled beyond repair.

I'd wipe the HD with Diskpart Clean Command to Clean Install Windows 7.

What was the exact infection?

Partition Wizard showed all his partitions in tact. That's why it refused to rewrite since it was already existing. I just confirmed it by zeroing only the MBR code in the first sector and then running PW.

The main Screen of Partition Wizard showed all the partitions and just as in the case of OP, the partition table cannot be rewritten (since it is already present) after running the Quick Scan, selecting the partitions and hitting Finish. There was no Pending Operation that could be applied.



If the OP now confirms that the main screen of PW shows his drive as it would normally show with all partitions, then it is only the MBR which has to be fixed - which PW was unable to.

So ,IMO, the OP should go ahead with bootrec.exe /fixmbr.

2. Instead of using plain Bootrec.exe command as described in step 7 of the above linked MS article, type this:

bootrec.exe /fixmbr (This will only rewrite the MBR code leaving the existing partition table intact)
3. Press Enter.
4. Restart the computer.

or create the AVG rescue CD and follow the procedure in the referenced article in the AVG Forum.

I can't remember the name of the virus
BSOD is giving PROCESS1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED (even in safe mode with command prompt).

Partition wizard shows the 2 Partitions as they should be, and double clicking on them shows the relevant files. windows repair can't see the drive though- diskpart's list disk and list part both show nothing, so I doubt I can even do a clean.

Similarly, bootrec /fix mbr just gives "the system cannot find the file specified".

Startup repair gives "Windows 7 cannot repair this computer automatically".

If partition wizard can see the drive, why cant Win7 repair tools?

You are using the wrong command for bootrec /fixboot. Follow Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start.
