On my windows 7, when i have all my windows minimised i can not choose the show windows side by side option.

Does this only happen when you have 1 window minimised and 1 window showing no matter what size??????? For some reason when i have 2 windows opened, 1 window minimised and one showing no matter what size and then click on show windows side by side it only shows and maximises the visible window.

I got around it by keeping both windows visible and then choosing show windows side by side. At the end of the day it does not matter whether windows are minimised or not, that option should always do what it is meant to do.

Hope this helped, if not at last i tried.

Both WinKey+left/right and Snap work correctly for me, Win 7 Pro X64. I get to identically sized windows, one aligned to the left side of the screen, the other to the right side. Undoing with WinKey+left/right also works to restore the window to it's original size and location.

Could the video driver or screen resolution affect this? What about themes?

When i use the WINKEY+LEFT/RIGHT its just the same as picture 2 about '2 small windows, However, if i use this method with 1 active window it fits a perfect half windows.

stranger still!

Just a thought (and not sure how it would help), but given that the windows in your 2nd screenshot look just about right to fit a 3rd window in there, could windows possibly be some how interpreting the desktop or some hidden window/process as a 3rd 'window', thus presenting all '3' Side by Side? Food for thought?

I also notice that in the 2 window screenshot, two of your Taskbar icons are highlighted, whereas in the 'dysfunctional' '3 window' screenshot, 3 of the taskbar icons are highlighted. A clue?

Not quite sure what you mean;

but yes it does look like it is interperating a 3rd windows but when i have 3 active windows in the so called side by side this is what happens;

And in this latest screenshot, it looks as though a '4th' window could fit. I have no idea of what it could be, but it definitely looks like windows thinks there is an additional window and creates space for it. Have you examined task manager for any additional programs running? Have you tried WinKey+tab to scroll through running apps to see if there are 4 instead of 3 (i.e., one more window than what is displayed side by side)?

You may also want to examine Task Manager/processes to see if anything there could be interpreted as an additional window. Also, what about the SysTray? Anything running there? Try closing the programs running there one by one, clicking Side by Side on the taskbar after closing each one to see if it makes a difference.

James

Edit: And same for the 4 window shot...there's room for a 5th window. We may be onto something here...

This is actually the same behavior. When I have only one active window and choose side by side from the task bar, the window maximises and fills the screen, so it appears that the same thing is happening when you try with one window...it is still making room for the 'invisible' window.

I don't think your situation is hopeless. It just needs to be figured out. Did you by any chance run SFC?

Not sure, but I'd tend to believe it is an unrully process or program. Not a showstopper, but annoying if it prevents you from working the way you want.

Another few ideas. Try turning off Aero Shake and then Aero Peek to see what happens:

Edit:

You might also try turning off Aero Glass altogether.

Also, check what's being run at startup via MSconfig and the Start Up folder in your start menu.
