Quad Core- 3 Cores Disabled/Not working??

I just installed/upgraded Windows 7 7000 build today and just noticed 3 of my cores are disabled even though they are enabled in the bios.

Everything else is working fine.

Any ideas as to what might be causing this issue.

Hi, zforce, and welcome to the forums.

Have you checked to see if the number of processors specified in your boot options (you can use MSCONFIG) is manually set to 1?

Just went into MSCONFIG and it only gave me an option for 1 core.

The only place it shows four cores is in the Device Manager. From there I uninstalled the drivers for all 4 cores and restarted at which point windows 7 installed the drivers again, yet again, only 1 core is working.

I should mention, all 4 cores show in my vista 64 partition.

Hello. In msconfig>boot>advanced options, tick the box next to number of processors, and the drop down box to allow for 4 should be available. I just checked this on my system. Let us know if that worked.

Was it grayed out? If you tick the box (as Joe suggest below) then the drop down only shows a single core?

Have you installed any device drivers (such as for your chipset) and / or stuff that might be 'legacy drivers / drivers that may have issues with W7?

Also, is this in a Virtual Machine or installed directly to your HD?

I think that is what he did, but to be sure I am asking again - from what it sounds like to me, though, he did that and the drop down only shows a single core....

Yes, it was grayed out, however I went into my Vista 64 bit MSconfig and was actually able to change the Windows 7 boot settings from 1 to 4, yet when I started windows 7, only 1 core was working.

No, I didn't install any drivers post windows 7, it was all transferred via upgrade from windows vista.

Do you know of any Legacy drivers in particular that might be causing the issue?

Also, it installed on my harddrive.

are you running as admin???

i dont see any other variable other than the easy transfer....

it might not be legacy *drivers* but it might be legacy configurations....

can you try to install it just vanilla???

no easy transfer (meaning before you do the easy transfer..)

and can you report back

also can W7 see your cpu as the one thats installed??

I had the same problem on Vista which was fixed by ticking detect HAL in the advanced options in msconfig.

I have been working on this issue all night and guess what...I'm done thanks to you.

Thats exactly what had needed to be done.

Funny thing is, I actually checked the "dtect hal" at one time and changed my mind thinking it wouldn't do anything. Boy was I wrong.
