Non operative USB ports on Dell Studio 540

Most of the USB ports are non operative on upgrading from Vista to Windows 7. I have the Dell Driver and Utilities Disk. The mouse works but printer and flash drive do not work on other ports.

I'd check Dell's website for drivers.

Have you tried swapping ports to isolate and confirm it is the ports themselves ??

Non operative USB Ports

I don't know what the cause was. Some one on a Google search suggested, go to Device Manager and turn off all the non operative USB ports and then reboot(Mouse and Keyboard USB ports were left on.) I rebooted, then activated each port with a miniature Flash Memory Drive and all the USB ports were OK.

I still could not get Win7 to recognize my USB Printer.

Printer you will or we will need to know make of printer and exact model number to help find a driver.

OP may need to download driver from manufacture's site/reboot/then plug in usb for printer.
I think this is what I did going from Vista HP to 7 HP with both of my printer's. IMHO

Probably. I see that quite a bit with "non business" printers.

Manufacturer's website is the best place to find the driver.
